Usertick
Skipped tutorial survey template

Learn why users skip your tutorial, and whether they found their way anyway

Three questions for the second session of users who skipped the intro: why they skipped it, whether they found their way around and what they wish the app had shown them. Usertick reads every written answer and groups what users missed.

What this tutorial feedback survey tells you

A skipped tutorial survey asks users who passed on your onboarding intro why, and whether they managed without it. This template takes about 45 seconds: the reason they skipped, a yes or no on finding their way, and an open question on what they wish the app had shown them.

It is written for the second session of users who skipped. In a web app, pass a trait such as skipped_intro with identify and target the survey to it (from Starter), then open it with a custom event on the next session. Inside a phone app, have the app remember the skip and open the survey's link on the second launch.

Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category such as getting started or ease of use with a theme from your list, and marks it as an idea, a complaint or a question. Results shows the share of each reason with typed Other answers listed, the share who found their way, and every written answer, against the period before.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice

Why did you skip the intro?

Why ask it
Each reason points to a different fix: experienced users want a faster path, a long intro needs cutting, explorers need hints along the way, and a mistaken tap needs a way back.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each reason, with typed Other answers listed beside it. Select It was too long to see what those users wish the intro had shown.
Make it yours
If your skip button is hard to tap by mistake, replace that option with one that fits your intro, such as I was in a hurry.
Question 2 of 3 · Yes / No

Did you find your way around anyway?

Why ask it
Skipping costs nothing when users find their way anyway, so the yes or no tells you whether the skip hurt.
What you learn
Results shows the share that said yes, against the period before. Select No to filter the page to users who got lost and read what they wish they had seen.
Make it yours
Give users who said No a way back to the intro, such as a link in the help menu, and mention it in the thank-you message.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What do you wish the app had shown you?

Why ask it
Users who skipped know which part of the app they had to work out alone, and naming it tells you which single hint could replace a full tutorial.
What you learn
Each answer appears with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends, so the feature most users had to discover alone stands out.
Make it yours
Turn the top theme into one hint shown at the moment it is needed, instead of another tutorial step.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Why did you skip the intro?

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask only users who skipped

Target the survey to users who skipped, by a trait in your web app or by your own code before the app opens the link, so nobody who watched the intro gets it.

  2. 02

    Wait one session

Ask on the second session, after users have tried the app on their own. On the first, they haven't had the chance to get lost.

  3. 03

Match the fix to the reason

Shorten the intro when It was too long leads the reasons, and add hints in the app when users wanted to explore on their own.

  4. 04

    Compare with users who watched

Run a short copy of the survey for users who finished the intro, and compare how easily each group found its way.

Frequently asked questions

On their second session, after they have used the app once without the intro. Ask once per user.

Usertick runs on websites and in web apps, so in a phone app have the app open the survey's link on the second launch for users who skipped. In a web app, user traits target it to those users (from Starter).

Look at question 2 first. If most who skipped found their way, a shorter intro may be enough; if many got lost, keep the content and move it into hints at the moment each feature is used.
