How to write survey questions that get honest answers
The same few rules hold for any topic.
- 01
Ask one thing at a time
A question about speed and friendliness together gets an answer about neither. Split it in two, or use a matrix when the parts share a scale.
- 02
Ask soon after the moment
People remember the last order, visit or session far better than the last year. Ask soon after it happens, and name it in the question.
- 03
Keep the words neutral
“How much did you enjoy the course?” assumes the person enjoyed it. “How would you rate the course?” leaves room for any answer.
- 04
Give every answer a place
Choices should cover every case without overlapping. Add Other or Not sure where a real answer might be missing, so no one has to pick something untrue.
- 05
Start with a score, end open
A score up front gives every response a number to follow. One open question at the end catches what your choices missed, and Usertick reads and files each answer.
- 06
Keep the survey short
Three to five questions get more answers than fifteen. Keep the questions you will act on, and use logic to skip the ones that don't apply.
Add these questions to a survey
From the library to the first answers.
- 1
Open the library
In the Usertick survey editor, choose From library, filter by industry and topic, and add several questions at once.
- 2
Or paste your own list
Paste questions reads up to 10 questions from any text on Free, 100 on Starter and 200 on Pro and above, keeps your wording and picks an answer type for each.
- 3
Choose where it runs
Show the survey on your website, send it by email, share its link and QR code, or switch it to a conversation.
- 4
Read the answers
Results counts every score and choice, and Usertick reads each written answer and files it by topic, on every plan.
Frequently asked questions
Three to five for most surveys, since short surveys get more answers. Start with a score, add the questions you will act on and end with one open question.
The one you most need answered, usually a score such as NPS or a star rating. A person who stops after the first question still leaves an answer you can use.
Use both. A score or a choice gives you numbers to compare over time, and an open question tells you why. Usertick reads every written answer and gives it a category, a theme and a sentiment, on every plan.
Yes. Paste questions reads up to 10 questions from any text on Free, 100 on Starter and 200 on Pro and above, keeps your wording and picks an answer type for each, and you can mix them with questions from the library.
On your website as a popup, a side button or inside the page, by email, as a link and QR code, or as a conversation that asks one question at a time.
