Moving out and deposits survey questions

Move-out questions that show how fair the deposit return felt

Ask departing tenants how moving out went, from the final inspection to the day the deposit came back. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What move-out survey questions tell you

Move-out survey questions ask tenants who are leaving about the last part of their tenancy: the final inspection, how much of the deposit came back and how fast, whether deductions were explained with evidence and why they are moving on. A deposit dispute is the last thing a tenant remembers about a landlord, and the story they tell the next renter starts there.

Ask after the deposit has been returned, by email or with a link in your own message. Pick five or six questions: the effort score, the grid, the deposit questions and one open question. Send the photo upload and the question on why they are leaving in the week before the move.

Each written answer gets a category, a theme and a sentiment, and each response an urgency, so a tenant who disputes a deduction gets an owner in the inbox before a formal complaint arrives.

The 14 moving out and deposits questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

How moving out went

Score the move out, then rate each step and the agent, so you know which part to change.

  1. 01Customer effort

    How easy was moving out?

A customer effort score for moving out. Results shows the average and the share who found it easy; read the low scores with the grid to find the step that made it hard.

  2. 02Matrix

Rate each part of moving out

Rates the final inspection, the deposit return, notice and paperwork, and handing back keys in one grid. The heat map shows which step left tenants unhappy.

  3. 13Stars

How helpful was the agent during the move out?

A star rating for the agent's help during the move out. Compare the share who rated 4 or higher across agents or offices.

  4. 08Multiple choice

What did you have to sort before leaving?

Shows what tenants had to sort before leaving, from cleaning to final meter readings. Keep Nothing in the list, and use the shares to write a clearer move-out checklist.

The deposit

Ask how much came back, how fast and whether deductions felt fair, the questions that decide how the tenancy ends.

  1. 04Multiple choice

How much of your deposit was returned?

How much of the deposit came back, from all of it to none. Select an answer in Results to filter every other question to those tenants, such as everyone who got half or less.

  2. 03Ruler

How many days did your deposit take to come back?

Days until the deposit came back, on a ruler up to 60. Results shows the median and the middle half; compare it with the time limit that applies where your homes are.

  3. 05Yes / No

Were any deductions explained with evidence?

Asks whether deductions came with evidence, such as photos from the inspection. Deposit disputes often begin with a No here, so read those answers first.

  4. 07Big scale

How fair did the deductions feel?

How fair the deductions felt, from 1 to 10. Ask it only of tenants who had deductions, with logic that skips it when the deposit question is answered All of it.

Before the inspection

Photos of how the tenant left the home and what they would have fixed show where your move-out guidance falls short.

  1. 14File upload

Upload photos of how you left the property

Photos of how the tenant left the home, attached to the answer. They give both sides a dated record before the inspection, with location data removed on upload. File upload is on every plan, 1 per survey on Free.

  2. 09Text

What would you have fixed before the inspection if you had known?

Asks what the tenant would have fixed before the inspection with more notice. The answers show which parts of the inspection catch tenants by surprise.

Why they left and what they say next

Reasons for leaving, the gap between homes and whether they would rent again tell you what to change for the next tenant.

  1. 10Dropdown

    Why are you moving out?

Why the tenant is leaving, from buying a home to a rent increase. Results shows the share of each, which separates the moves you can't prevent from the ones you could.

  2. 11Number

How many days did you have between the two homes?

Days between the two homes, from none to two months. Results shows the median and the middle half, which helps you decide whether to offer flexible end dates.

  3. 12Yes / No

Would you rent from this landlord again?

A plain yes or no on whether the tenant would rent from this landlord again. Select No in Results to read their answers on the deposit and the inspection.

  4. 06Text

What would you tell the next tenant about this place?

An open question about what the tenant would tell the next one. Each answer gets a theme and a sentiment, so you see what departing tenants say about the home before you list it again.
