Second hand and resale survey questions

Resale questions that show what makes second hand sell

Ask shoppers whether they would buy used, how accurate your condition grades are and what they want for a trade in. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What resale survey questions tell you

Resale survey questions ask shoppers whether they would buy an item used, what puts them off, how accurate your condition grades are and what they would want for trading an item in. A resale or trade in program depends on trust in the condition, and these answers show where that trust holds and where it breaks.

Ask the questions about buying used on product pages and in your new order surveys, and the questions about condition after a used item arrives, by email or link. Ask the trade in questions once a shopper has sent an item in. Three to five questions per survey is enough.

Each written answer gets a category, a theme, a type such as idea or question, and a sentiment, so questions about hygiene, warranties or wear are easy to filter. Photos of items for trade in arrive in a gallery in Results with location data removed, ready for whoever grades them.

The 13 second hand and resale questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

Whether shoppers would buy used

Ask these before you widen a resale program, to see which products and prices would sell.

  1. 01Yes / No

Would you buy this item used if it cost less?

A yes or no on buying this item used for less. Ask it on the product page or after a new order. The share of Yes shows which products are worth offering second hand.

  2. 03Multiple choice

What puts you off buying second hand?

Shoppers pick everything that puts them off, from hygiene to harder returns. Bars show each share, a list of what your listings and policies need to answer.

  3. 07Slider

How much less should a used item cost than a new one?

How much less a used item should cost, on a slider. The label leaves the unit open, so say percent in the wording. Results shows the median and the middle half.

  4. 12Ranking

Rank what matters when buying second hand

Shoppers rank what matters when buying second hand. Results shows the average place per item, which tells you whether photos of the real item or a return window matter more than price.

  5. 10Text

What would you need to know before buying second hand?

An open question for what shoppers need to know first. Each answer arrives with a theme and a type such as question, so the details your used listings lack are easy to count.

  6. 09Text

Which of our products would you happily buy used?

An open question for products shoppers would happily buy used. Filter by theme to count the categories that come up most before you widen the program.

The used items shoppers buy

Ask shoppers who already bought used whether the condition matched your grade.

  1. 11Number

How many used items have you bought in the last year?

How many used items the shopper bought in the last year. Results shows the median and the middle half, a quick measure of how familiar your shoppers already are with buying used.

  2. 02Multiple choice

What condition was the used item in?

The condition the used item arrived in, against your description. The donut shows the share for each, and every answer worse than described or not usable needs an owner in the inbox.

  3. 06Stars

How accurate was the condition grade?

A star rating for how accurate the condition grade was. Results shows the average and the share who gave four or more. Low ratings point at the grading step, item by item.

Trading in and reselling

Ask what shoppers do with items they no longer want and how a trade in went, to shape the offer.

  1. 04Dropdown

What do you do with items you no longer want?

What the shopper does with things they no longer want. Results shows the share of each, and the share who sell or give items away is the supply a trade in program could reach.

  2. 05Multiple choice

What would you want for a trade in?

One reward per shopper for a trade in, from cash to money off the new item. The donut shows the share for each, which helps you set a trade in offer that works.

  3. 08Customer effort

How easy was it to send an item in for resale?

A customer effort score for sending an item in for resale. A low average points at the label, the packing or the wait for an offer.

  4. 13File upload

Upload photos of the item you want to trade in

Photos of the item the shopper wants to trade in, attached to the answer. File upload is on every plan, 1 per survey on Free, and location data is removed. Use the photos for a first offer before the item ships.
