Recommendations and offers survey questions

Recommendation questions that show which suggestions shoppers want

Ask shoppers how your suggestions feel, what should shape them and what they want to see less of. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What product recommendation survey questions tell you

Product recommendation survey questions ask shoppers whether your suggestions help, what they should be based on, where shoppers notice them and when they go too far. Good suggestions save a shopper a search, while poor ones repeat what they bought or seem to know too much.

Ask on the home page or a product page where suggestions appear, after a scroll or time on site trigger, and keep it to two or three questions. Ask the consent question only where you plan to use order history, and act on the answer.

Each written answer gets a category, a theme, a type such as idea or complaint, and a sentiment, so requests for missing products and complaints about repeats are easy to filter. Selecting an answer in Results filters the whole page, for example to shoppers who find the suggestions a bit creepy.

The 13 recommendations and offers questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

Whether suggestions help

Ask whether suggestions lead to orders and how they feel, before you change how they are picked.

  1. 01Yes / No

Have you bought something we recommended?

A yes or no on whether the shopper has ever bought a suggested item. Results shows the share of Yes, a simple check that suggestions earn their space on the page.

  2. 06Stars

How useful are the products we suggest?

A star rating for how useful the suggested products are. Results shows the average and the share who gave four or more, a number to follow after you change how suggestions work.

  3. 07Big scale

How well do we seem to know what you like?

How well the shop seems to know the shopper, on a scale of 1 to 10. A column per step in Results shows whether suggestions feel personal or generic to most shoppers.

  4. 02Multiple choice

    How do our recommendations feel?

One word for how suggestions feel, from spot on to a bit creepy. The donut shows the share for each, and a rising share for the last option is a sign to pull back on personal data.

  5. 08Emoji

How does a home page built around you feel?

A row of faces for a home page built around the shopper. Results shows each face's share, and reading it beside how suggestions feel tells you how far a personal page can go.

What should shape them

Ask what suggestions should follow and ask for permission to use order history.

  1. 03Multiple choice

What should shape what we show you?

Shoppers pick every signal suggestions should follow, from past orders to what is new. Bars show each share, and the share who want everyone shown the same is worth respecting.

  2. 10Points allocation

Split 100 points across what our suggestions should follow

Shoppers split 100 points across what suggestions should follow. Results shows the average points per item, which weighs past orders against browsing, popular items, new arrivals and sales.

  3. 11Consent

May we use your order history to personalize the shop?

Asks for permission to use order history for a personal shop. Put it where the shopper can see what changes, and use order history only for shoppers who agreed.

  4. 09Text

What should we have suggested and did not?

An open question for the product the shopper expected to see. Each answer arrives with a theme, so gaps in the range and gaps in the suggestions are easy to tell apart.

Where and how many

Find where suggestions get noticed, what to cut and how full each row should be.

  1. 04Dropdown

Where do you notice recommendations most?

Where shoppers notice suggestions most, from the cart to emails. Results shows the share of each, a guide to where suggestions do their work.

  2. 05Multiple choice

What do you want to see less of?

The one thing shoppers want less of, from items they already bought to the same item over and over. The donut shows the share for each, a short list of rules to add to your suggestions.

  3. 12Number

How many suggested items do you want on a page?

How many suggested items the shopper wants on a page. Results shows the median and the middle half, a guide to the size of each suggestion row.

  4. 13This or that

    You would rather the shop

Two pairs: suited to the shopper or the same for everyone, and fewer close matches or more to browse. The split bar per pair shows how personal and how full to make suggestions.

Tips for asking about recommendations and offers

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask where suggestions appear

Show the survey on the pages that carry suggestions, with page targeting and a scroll trigger, so shoppers have just seen them.

  2. 02

    Ask before you personalize

Put the consent question before you use order history, and personalize only for shoppers who agreed.

  3. 03

    Watch how suggestions feel

Track the share who find suggestions a bit creepy each period. A rise after a change means the suggestions use more than shoppers expect.

  4. 04

    Fix repeats first

The answers about what shoppers want less of are quick wins, such as hiding items already bought or sold out.
