Templates and presets survey questions

Template questions that show which starting points users keep

Ask users whether they start from a template, how close it came to what they needed and which ones are missing. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What template feedback survey questions tell you

Template feedback survey questions ask users whether they started from a template, how close it was to what they needed, what they changed, how much time it saved and which templates you don't offer yet. A good template shortens the path to a user's first result, and the answers show which templates do that and which get rewritten from scratch.

Ask right after a user creates something from a template, inside the product, and the wider questions in a short survey to active users. Pick four or five: whether they used a template, how close it was, what they did with it, the time saved and the missing template.

Written answers get a theme and a type, so a request for a new template is filed as an idea and a broken template as a bug. Each response gets an owner and a status in the inbox, so the person who maintains your template gallery sees every request.

The 14 templates and presets questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

Whether users start from a template

Start with whether, how and why users pick a template, so every other answer can be read by habit.

  1. 01Yes / No

Did you start from a template?

Asks whether the user started from a template. Add logic so users who say No go to the blank page question, which shows why they skipped templates.

  2. 09Dropdown

How do you find a template?

How users find a template, from the gallery to a link from a colleague. The share of each answer shows where to place templates in the product.

  3. 10This or that

When you start something new you prefer

One pair: a blank page or a worked example. The split bar shows whether new users should see templates first or an empty start.

How well the template fits

These show how close each template comes to the user's work and what they change before using it.

  1. 04Stars

How close was the template to what you needed?

Five stars for how close the template was to what the user needed. Read it with what they did with it to see which templates get used as they are.

  2. 05Multiple choice

What did you do with the template?

One choice from used as it was to started over from blank. A large share starting over means your templates miss the work users do.

  3. 02Customer effort

How easy was it to change the template to fit your work?

A customer effort score for changing the template to fit the user's work. Low scores point to templates that are hard to edit, a design problem more than a content one.

  4. 11Text

What do you always change in a template before you use it?

An open question for what users always change in a template. The answers show the defaults to fix, such as wording, branding or length.

The value of templates

Time saved, team use, priorities and the grid show what makes a template worth keeping.

  1. 08Big scale

How much time did starting from a template save you?

Time saved by starting from a template, on a ten-step scale. Results shows a column per step, a simple read on the value of your template gallery.

  2. 12Number

How many templates does your team use regularly?

Templates the team uses regularly, typed as a number. The median shows whether teams rely on one template or keep a library of them.

  3. 13Ranking

Rank what makes a template worth using

Users drag five qualities into order, from good default questions to team use. Results shows the average place of each, which tells you what to get right in every template.

  4. 14Matrix

Rate the templates you have used

Rates relevance, ease of editing, wording and design on one grid. The heat map shows which side of your templates needs work.

Templates to add next

End with the templates users want and whether they already build their own.

  1. 03Multiple choice

Which templates would help you most?

Lets users pick every template that would help, from onboarding to bug reports. Replace the options with your own categories; the bars show which ones to add first.

  2. 06Text

Which template do we not have yet?

An open question for a template you don't offer yet. Filter the answers by theme to find the requests that repeat.

  3. 07Yes / No

Do you save your own work as a template?

Asks whether users save their own work as templates. A high share of Yes points to sharing templates across a team as a feature worth building.

Tips for asking about templates and presets

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask right after use

Show the survey after a user creates something from a template, while they know how much they changed.

  2. 02

  3. 03

    Fix the defaults users change

Read the answers about what users always change, and update the template so the next user doesn't have to.

  4. 04

    Add templates from requests

Give each request for a new template an owner in the inbox, and close it when the template ships.
