Usertick
Feature adoption survey template

See whether users found your new feature, and what keeps the rest away

Four questions for your web app two weeks after a release: whether users tried the new feature, what kept them from using it more, how useful it was and what would make it part of their daily work. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this feature adoption survey tells you

A feature adoption survey asks users whether a new feature reached them and, if not, why. This template is written around a new dashboards feature and asks four questions in about a minute: whether they tried it, what has kept them from using it more, how useful it was for those who tried, and what would make it part of their daily work.

It is written for a popup in your web app about two weeks after the release, shown to users on the pages where the feature would help. Set the date the survey opens, keep it to the right pages with page rules, and from Starter show it only to users on the plans that include the feature.

Results shows the share who tried the feature, the share of each barrier and the average usefulness rating, against the period before. Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category such as features and gaps or ease of use, with a theme and a type.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Yes / No

Have you tried the new dashboards yet?

Why ask it
The first question measures reach: whether the feature has found its users at all, before anyone judges it.
What you learn
The share that said yes, compared with the period before. Select No to see what kept those users away.
Make it yours
Replace the new dashboards with the name of your own feature, in the words your release notes used.
Question 2 of 4 · Multiple choice · Optional

What has kept you from using them more?

Why ask it
The options separate reasons you fix in different places: awareness, time, relevance, confusion and a missing piece. Users can pick several.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each reason, with typed Other answers listed, so you see whether the feature has a discovery problem or a design problem.
Make it yours
If the leading reason is that users didn't know the feature existed, fix the announcement before you change the feature.
Question 3 of 4 · Stars · Optional

If you've tried them, how useful were they?

Why ask it
Usefulness from the users who tried it tells you whether to promote the feature more or improve it first. Users who haven't tried it can pass, since the question is optional.
What you learn
The average on the 1 to 5 scale, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher. Select Yes on the first question to read the rating of users who tried it.
Make it yours
If you want only users who tried the feature to see the rating, move it right after question 1 and add a rule so a No skips it.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

What would make them part of your daily work?

Why ask it
The answer describes the missing step between trying a feature and relying on it, such as a default view, an export or a link from the screen users already open.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, files it under a category and a theme, and marks it as an idea, a complaint or a bug. Filter by theme to read every request about one part of the feature.
Make it yours
Read these answers next to the barriers in question 2, since the same request often shows up in both.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

If you've tried them, how useful were they?

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Wait two weeks after the release

Give users time to come across the feature on their own. Set the survey's Opens at date when you ship, so it starts on the right day.

  2. 02

Show it where the feature lives

Use page rules for the screens where the feature helps, such as the reports area, so the question comes up in context.

  3. 03

Close it when the release is old

Keep the show frequency on until answered, and end the survey after a few weeks with Closes at, so the answers describe this release.

  4. 04

Repeat it for the next release

Duplicate the survey for each major feature and rename the questions, so each release gets its own numbers in Results.
