Beta feedback survey template

Hear from beta testers, before the feature reaches everyone

Four questions for testers after a week with the beta: how satisfied they are, what worked, what was confusing, missing or broken, and whether they will keep using it at launch. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this beta feedback survey tells you

A beta feedback survey asks early users what to fix before a feature launches to everyone. This template keeps it to four questions and a little over a minute: an overall score, two open questions on what worked and what didn't, and how likely testers are to keep using the feature once it ships.

It is written for an email to your list of testers about a week after they get access, and for a link you share in the beta's own channel, such as a community thread or the welcome document. In your web app, the same survey can open as a popup for the users in the beta.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category such as ease of use, speed and reliability or features and gaps, with a type, so bugs and ideas arrive sorted. Results shows the average score, the share of testers likely to keep using the feature, and the themes in what they wrote.

In an email

Send it from Usertick to a contact list, with the first question inside the email. A tap on an answer opens the rest of the survey with that answer already kept. Usertick sends 50 emails a month on the free plan, or connect your own sender.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Stars

Overall, how satisfied are you with the beta?

Why ask it
One overall score gives the beta a number you can compare across rounds, before the open questions ask for detail.
What you learn
The average on the 1 to 5 scale, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, against the period before, so a second beta round shows whether the fixes landed.
Make it yours
Keep it first. In the email, testers tap a star inside the message and the rest of the survey opens with that answer kept.
Question 2 of 4 · Text · Optional

What worked well?

Why ask it
Testers who say what worked tell you what to protect while you fix the rest, and what to lead with in the launch announcement.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer and marks praise apart from ideas and complaints. Results lists the answers with their theme and sentiment, so the strengths testers name most are easy to find.
Make it yours
Read these answers before you cut scope, so the part testers liked most survives the changes.
Question 3 of 4 · Text · Optional

What was confusing, missing or broken?

Why ask it
One question covers the three kinds of problem a beta finds: unclear design, gaps in scope and plain bugs. Testers don't have to decide which it is before they write.
What you learn
Usertick sorts each answer by type, so bugs, ideas and complaints separate on their own, and flags the urgent ones. Filter by theme to see every problem with one part of the feature.
Make it yours
On every plan, a workflow can open a Jira or Linear issue for each answer the AI marks as a bug.
Question 4 of 4 · Multiple choice

How likely are you to keep using it once it launches?

Why ask it
Whether testers expect to keep using the feature at launch is the clearest sign that it solves a real problem for them.
What you learn
A donut with the share of each answer, compared with the period before. Select Very unlikely to read what those testers found confusing, missing or broken.
Make it yours
Ask the same question again a few weeks after launch, with the same options, so the two numbers compare.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Overall, how satisfied are you with the beta?

The average rating and the share who gave 4 or 5 stars, against the period before.

How likely are you to keep using it once it launches?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Wait for real use

Send it after testers have used the beta for about a week. Schedule the send when you open the beta, up to 30 days ahead, so it goes out on the right day.

  2. 02

Send it once to each tester

Skip people who already received this survey is on by default, so a second send to the same list reaches only the testers added since.

  3. 03

    Keep each round apart

Duplicate the survey for each beta round, so every round's scores and themes stay separate in Results and compare cleanly.

  4. 04

    Tell testers what changed

Note each fix on the responses in the inbox as you ship it, then tell testers which of their answers led to a change.
