Audit logs and history survey questions

Audit log questions that show what admins need on record

Ask the admins who use your activity log which events they need, how long to keep them and how easy a change is to find. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What audit log survey questions tell you

Audit log survey questions ask admins whether they have needed to find out who changed something, how easy that was, which events they need recorded, how far back the history should go and where the log should be sent. An audit trail sits unused until something breaks or an auditor asks, and that is the moment a missing event costs the most.

Ask the finding questions right after someone uses the activity log, inside the page, and the requirement questions once or twice a year by email. Pick four or five per survey: the events needed, the history length, the ease score and the missing event.

Written answers get a theme and a type, so a missing event is filed as an idea and a log that dropped a change as a bug. Each response gets an owner and a status in the inbox, and workflows can open a Jira or Linear issue for the requests you take on.

The 14 audit logs and history questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

Why admins open the log

Start with whether the log has a real job on the account and how often admins need it.

  1. 01Yes / No

Have you ever needed to find out who changed something?

Asks whether the admin ever needed to find who changed something. A Yes shows the log has a real job on the account; add logic so those who say No skip the ease question.

  2. 10Number

How many times a month do you open the activity log?

How often the admin opens the log each month, typed as a number. The median shows whether the log is a weekly tool or one opened only when something happens.

  3. 11Multiple choice

Why do you look at the activity log?

One choice for why the admin opens the log, from a security review to curiosity. The donut shows which job to design the page around.

Finding a change

Ask these right after a search, so the answers describe a real attempt to find who did what.

  1. 02Customer effort

How easy was it to find that change in the activity log?

A customer effort score for finding the change. Ask it on the activity log page, and read low scores with the readability rating to see whether the layout of each entry is the problem.

  2. 05Stars

How readable is the activity log?

Five stars for how readable the log is. Results shows the average and the share who rated 4 or higher, a check on whether entries say what changed in plain words.

  3. 12Matrix

Rate each part of the activity log

Rates search, filters, detail per event and export on one grid. The heat map shows which part of the log page to improve first.

What the log records

Events, history length, gaps, trust and priorities define what every entry in your log has to hold.

  1. 03Multiple choice

Which events do you need recorded?

Lets admins pick every event they need recorded, from sign ins to setting changes. The bars show which events your log has to cover first.

  2. 04Multiple choice

How far back do you need the history to go?

One choice for how far back history should go. The donut shows the share needing a year or more, which shapes your storage plan and which plan gets longer history.

  3. 08Text

Which event is missing from the log?

An open question for an event missing from the log. Filter the answers by theme to see which events repeat, and add them to the events question in the next round.

  4. 09Big scale

How much do you trust the log to be complete?

Trust that the log is complete, on a ten-step scale. Low scores mean admins keep their own records on the side, a sign the log isn't ready for an audit.

  5. 14Ranking

Rank what matters most in an audit trail

Admins drag five audit trail needs into order, from who did it to export. Results shows the average place of each, which tells you what every entry must show first.

Sending the log and alerts

End with where the log should go and which changes deserve an alert, so the log reaches people who don't open it.

  1. 06Yes / No

Do you need to send the log to another system?

Asks whether the log needs to go to another system. Add logic so only admins who say Yes see where they would send it.

  2. 07Dropdown

Where would you send the log?

Where the admin would send the log, from Splunk to cloud storage. The share of each answer shows which export or connector to build first.

  3. 13Text

Which change would you want an alert for?

An open question for a change worth an alert. The answers point to the events admins want to hear about right away, such as a permission change or a large export.

Tips for asking about audit logs and history

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask after real use

Show the finding questions right after an admin searches the log. Admins who never open it can answer the yearly survey instead.

  2. 02

    Ask ahead of audit season

Send the requirement questions a few months before your customers' audits, so new events can ship in time.

  3. 03

Treat a missing change as a bug

When an admin reports a change that didn't appear in the log, give it an owner and a status in the inbox the same day.

  4. 04

Grow the events list each round

Use the open answers about missing events to add options to the events question next time, so the list keeps up with requests.

Add these questions to a survey

From the library to the first answers.

  1. 1

    Open the library

In the Usertick survey editor, choose From library, filter by industry and topic, and add several questions at once.

  2. 2

    Or paste your own list

Paste questions reads up to 10 questions from any text on Free, 100 on Starter and 200 on Pro and above, keeps your wording and picks an answer type for each.

  3. 3

    Choose where it runs

Show the survey on your website, send it by email, share its link and QR code, or switch it to a conversation.

  4. 4

    Read the answers

Results counts every score and choice, and Usertick reads each written answer and files it by topic, on every plan.
