Usertick
Fake door test survey template

Measure demand for a feature, before you build it

Four questions for the people who select a button for a feature you haven't built: how important it is, what it should include and whether they want an email when it is ready. Usertick reads every typed answer and lists the addresses of everyone who asked to hear back.

What this fake door test survey tells you

A fake door test puts a button for a planned feature in your product and asks the people who select it what they need. This template takes under a minute: a welcome screen that says calendar sync isn't ready yet, a rating for how important it is, what it should include, and an offer of an email when it is ready.

It is written for a popup in your web app that opens when the button for the planned feature is selected. From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, use an element click trigger on that button, or fire a custom event from your code. Replace calendar sync with your own feature on the welcome screen and in the questions.

Results shows the average importance with a bar per star and the share who rated it 4 or higher, the share asking for each part, and the share who want an email. People who say Yes leave their contact details, which Results lists in a table of names and emails.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Stars

How important is calendar sync to you?

Why ask it
A click shows interest. The rating shows how much the feature matters to the person who clicked, so you can tell curiosity from real need.
What you learn
The average, a bar per rating and the share who rated it 4 or higher. Select the 5-star answers to see what the people who need it most want it to include.
Make it yours
Change calendar sync to your feature's name here and on the welcome screen.
Question 2 of 4 · Multiple choice · Optional

What should it include?

Why ask it
The parts people ask for define the first version. Allowing several answers shows which combinations matter, such as two-way sync with Outlook.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each part, since people can pick several, and the typed Other answers listed beside them.
Make it yours
List the options you are weighing for the first release, and read the Other answers for the ones you missed.
Question 3 of 4 · Yes / No

Would you like an email when it's ready?

Why ask it
Asking for an email is a second, stronger test of demand, since people who want to hear when it ships are the ones most likely to use it.
What you learn
The share that said yes, compared with the period before. If No, the survey ends, so only people who said Yes are asked for an address.
Make it yours
Keep the skip, so people who said No finish after three questions.
Question 4 of 4 · Contact · Optional

Where should we send it?

Why ask it
The address is your launch list. Asking only after a Yes keeps it to the people who asked for it.
What you learn
A table of names and emails. Each Contact answer also becomes a contact in Usertick, so you can send a follow-up survey to that list once the feature ships.
Make it yours
Usertick doesn't send announcements, so export the table or sync the contacts to HubSpot with a workflow and send the news from there.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How important is calendar sync to you?

The average rating and the share who gave 4 or 5 stars, against the period before.

What should it include?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Say plainly that it isn't ready

Keep the welcome screen honest about the feature not existing yet, so people who clicked don't feel tricked.

  2. 02

Count clicks as well as answers

Compare the number of responses with the clicks your analytics records on the button, since some people will close the popup without answering.

  3. 03

Take the door down when you decide

Remove the button once you have enough answers, and tell the people on the list what you decided.

  4. 04

    Test one feature per survey

Run a separate survey for each planned feature, so ratings and requests never mix in Results.
