Usertick
Product usage survey template

Learn how people use your product, and the job they rely on it for

Four questions for active users once or twice a year: how often they use the product, the areas they spend the most time in, how much value they get for their time and what they mainly use it for. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this product usage survey tells you

A product usage survey asks users to describe their habits in their own terms, next to what your analytics already show. This template asks four questions in about a minute: how often they use the product, a ranking of the areas they spend the most time in, how much value they get for the time they put in, and the main job they use it for.

It is written for an email to active users once or twice a year, so each round can be compared with the last. The same survey runs as a link in your newsletter or customer community, and as a popup in your web app for signed-in users.

Results shows the share of each frequency, the average place of each area, and the average value score with a column per step on the 1 to 10 scale, against the period before. Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category and a theme from your list, so the jobs users name come grouped.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Dropdown

How often do you use the product?

Why ask it
Frequency in the user's own words sets the context for every other answer. A user who logs in monthly sees a different product from one who works in it all day.
What you learn
A donut with the share of each frequency, as stacked shares over time, so you can see whether daily use grows from one round to the next.
Make it yours
Select Several times a day and read the main jobs of your heaviest users, since they describe the product at its best. In the email, users pick their answer inside the message.
Question 2 of 4 · Ranking · Optional

Rank the areas you spend the most time in

Why ask it
Analytics counts clicks, while the ranking shows where users feel their time goes, which can differ from page views.
What you learn
The average place of each area, so the area most users rank first shows at the top, compared with the round before.
Make it yours
Rename the five areas after the main parts of your product, in the words of your navigation.
Question 3 of 4 · Big scale

How much value do you get for the time you put in?

Why ask it
Value for the time spent is a fair test for a product people use often. A heavy user who scores low is at risk even while usage looks healthy.
What you learn
The average and a column per step from 1, very little, to 10, a great deal, compared with the period before. Select a frequency in the first question to read the score of that group alone.
Make it yours
Read low scores from daily users first, since they spend the most time and get the least back.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

In your own words, what do you mainly use the product for?

Why ask it
The main job, in the user's words, is how they would describe the product to a colleague, and it can differ from your own positioning.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer and files it under a category and a theme from your list. Results groups the answers by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Use the jobs named most in your onboarding and marketing, in the users' own words.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Run it in the same month

Send each round at the same time of year, so seasonal habits don't look like a trend. Usertick doesn't repeat sends, so schedule each round yourself.

  2. 02

    Ask active users

Send it to users who logged in recently, from a list you import as contacts, so the answers describe the product as it is used today.

  3. 03

    Keep the questions stable

Change the areas only when your product changes, so each round compares with the one before.

  4. 04

    Pair it with your analytics

Compare the ranking with your page view data. Where an area ranks high in the survey but low in page views, users may spend more effort there than time.
