Usertick
Mobile usage survey template

Plan your mobile work, around what users already do on a phone

Three questions before you plan mobile work: how much of each user's time is on a phone, what they do there and what still needs a computer. Usertick reads every written answer and groups the gaps into themes.

What this mobile usage survey tells you

A mobile usage survey asks your users how much of their work in your product happens on a phone and what for. This template takes under a minute: a slider from all on a computer to all on a phone, the tasks they already do on the go, and one open question about what they can still only do on a computer.

It is written for an email to active users a few weeks before you plan mobile work. The slider shows as a button in the email, so each user opens the survey on its hosted page, on whatever device they read email on. The same survey runs as a link in your newsletter or help center, or as a popup in your web app with device targeting.

Results shows the median share of phone use with the middle half of answers drawn over the 0 to 100 scale, the share of each phone task, and each written answer with its theme. Usertick reads every answer and files the missing tasks under themes from your list, so the gap named most often is easy to find.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Slider · Optional

How much of your use is on a phone?

Why ask it
A share of use gives a number you can plan around, and the slider lets users answer with a rough figure instead of picking a fixed band.
What you learn
The median and the middle half of answers drawn over the 0 to 100 scale, compared with the period before. Add an answer filter for the high end to read what heavy phone users still can't do there.
Make it yours
Compare the median with the device split in your analytics, since what users report and where they log in can differ.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What do you do on your phone?

Why ask it
Tasks on a phone are short and urgent: checking a number, approving a request, replying to someone. Knowing which ones matter tells you what a small screen has to do well first.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each task, since users can pick several, with the typed Other answers listed. Select Approve things to see how much of those users' time is on a phone.
Make it yours
Replace the options with the tasks your product supports, and keep Nothing so users who never use a phone can say so.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What can you only do on a computer today?

Why ask it
The tasks users can only do on a computer are your mobile gaps, named by the people who hit them. One open question collects them without a long list of options.
What you learn
Usertick gives each answer a theme and a sentiment and marks ideas and complaints. Results lists the answers filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Read it with the first question: a gap named by users who already do most of their work on a phone is the one to fix first.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask before you plan

Send it a few weeks before you set the next quarter's plan, so the answers can still change it.

  2. 02

    Send it to active users

Import a list of users who logged in during the last month. People who stopped using the product can't tell you how they use it today.

  3. 03

    Compare answers by device

Filter Results by device to compare the answers given on a phone with those given on a computer, and look for the tasks each group names.

  4. 04

Share the gaps with the team

On every plan, a workflow adds each response to a Google Sheet, so the product team can sort the gaps and pick the first ones to fix.
