Sandbox and test data survey questions

Sandbox questions that show whether a passing test means a safe release

Ask developers and admins how they test changes before they reach live, and what your sandbox is missing. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What sandbox survey questions tell you

Sandbox survey questions ask developers and admins whether they test before changes reach their live account, where they test, how easy test data is to create and how closely the sandbox matches live. When testing is hard, teams test in live, and a mistake there reaches real customers. The answers show what would make the sandbox the easier choice.

Ask the technical contacts on each account by email or link, or show the survey inside the sandbox itself after a test run. Pick four or five: where they test, the ease of test data, how close the sandbox is to live, the confidence score and what is missing.

Written answers get a theme and a type, so a sandbox that behaves differently from live is filed as a bug and a request for a reset button as an idea. Each response gets an owner and a status in the inbox, and workflows can open a Jira or Linear issue from a response.

The 14 sandbox and test data questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

How teams test today

Start with whether and where teams test, so the other answers can be read by testing habit.

  1. 01Yes / No

Do you test changes before they reach your live account?

Asks whether the team tests before changes reach live. Add logic so teams who say No go to the question about what is missing, which may explain why.

  2. 02Multiple choice

    Where do you test?

One choice for where testing happens, from a sandbox account to straight in live. The donut shows how many teams test in live, the share your sandbox work should shrink.

  3. 10Dropdown

How often do you reset your test data?

How often test data gets reset, from after every run to never. The share of each answer shows whether a reset button or a nightly reset fits better.

  4. 13Number

How many people on your team need sandbox access?

How many people need sandbox access, typed as a number. The median shows whether sandbox seats should follow live seats or stay small.

What the sandbox should hold

These show which sandbox features to build and which defaults teams want.

  1. 04Multiple choice

What do you need in a sandbox?

Lets users pick everything they need in a sandbox, from sample records to a reset button. The bars show which sandbox features to build first.

  2. 07Text

What is missing from the sandbox today?

An open question for what the sandbox is missing today. Filter the answers by theme to see which gaps repeat across accounts.

  3. 14This or that

For a test environment you would rather have

Two pairs: a fresh empty space or a copy of live data, reset by hand or every night. The split bars show the defaults to build first.

How close testing is to live

Match, confidence and the stories of mistakes show whether a passing test can be trusted.

  1. 05Stars

How closely does the sandbox match the live product?

Five stars for how closely the sandbox matches the live product. A low average means passing tests prove little, so read it with the confidence score.

  2. 09Big scale

How confident are you that a passing test means live will work?

Confidence that a passing test means live will work, on a ten-step scale. Low scores point to differences between sandbox and live that users have learned to distrust.

  3. 06Yes / No

Have you ever sent test data to real customers by mistake?

Asks whether test data ever reached real customers by mistake. Give every Yes an owner in the inbox, since each one describes a guard your product could add.

  4. 11Text

Describe the last change you wish you had tested first.

An open question for the last change the user wishes they had tested first. The stories show which kinds of change need a sandbox most.

Setting up a test run

End with the effort and time a test takes, and how each testing tool works.

  1. 03Customer effort

How easy is it to create test data?

A customer effort score for creating test data. Select the low scores in Results to see where those teams test and what they say is missing.

  2. 08Ruler

How many minutes does it take to set up a test run?

Minutes to set up a test run, on a ruler up to an hour. The median shows what a test costs, and long setups help explain teams that skip testing.

  3. 12Matrix

Rate each part of testing with us

Rates test API keys, sample data, webhook replay and logs on one grid. The heat map shows which part of testing pulls the experience down.

Tips for asking about sandbox and test data

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask after a test run

Show the survey inside the sandbox when a test run finishes. From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, a custom event from your code can open it at that moment.

  2. 02

    Ask the people who test

Send the survey to developers and admins who make changes, by email or link, and leave out users who only work in live.

  3. 03

Treat mistakes in live as urgent

Give every report of test data reaching real customers an owner in the inbox the same day.

  4. 04

Close the gap with live first

When the match rating is low, fix the differences between sandbox and live before adding new sandbox features.
