Usertick
Data export survey template

Learn where your data goes, once customers download it

Four questions for the moment an export finishes: the formats, how often, what the data is for and what is missing. Usertick reads every written answer and groups the missing pieces into themes.

What this data export survey tells you

A data export survey asks customers what they take out of your product and why, right after they download a file. This template takes about a minute: the formats they use, how often they export, what the export is for and one open question about what is missing from it.

It is written for your web app, as a popup on the page where exports are downloaded. Every plan can target that page, and from Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, the survey can open on an element click on the export button or on a custom event from your code. The same survey also runs as a link in your newsletter or as an email to customers who export often.

Results shows the share of each format, frequency and use against the period before, and selecting an answer such as Another tool narrows the page to those customers. Usertick reads each written answer and files it under a theme from your list, with a type and a sentiment.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Multiple choice · Optional

Which formats do you export to?

Why ask it
The formats customers pick tell you which ones to keep improving and which you could drop. An API answer marks a customer who already builds on your data.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each format, since customers can pick several, and the typed Other answers listed. Select Through the API to see what those customers use the data for.
Make it yours
Keep I don't export as an option if you also share the link in your newsletter, so customers who never export can still answer.
Question 2 of 4 · Dropdown · Optional

How often do you export?

Why ask it
A daily export is a sign that customers do work outside your product that it could do for them. Frequency shows how much of that work there is.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each frequency, over time as stacked shares. Select Daily to read what those customers say is missing.
Make it yours
Read the daily and weekly answers next to the use question, since frequent exports for a report often point to a scheduled report you could build.
Question 3 of 4 · Multiple choice

What do you use the export for?

Why ask it
The use behind the export says what to build next: a report for others suggests sharing, another tool suggests an integration, and a spreadsheet suggests better reports inside the product.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each use, with typed Other answers listed, and the shares over time. Select A report for others to see which formats those customers pick and how often they export.
Make it yours
Allow several answers if your customers export for more than one reason.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

What's missing from the export?

Why ask it
A missing column or filter is a small fix that saves a customer work every week, and only the person exporting knows which one it is.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer and gives it a theme and a type such as an idea or a complaint. Results lists the answers filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, and read the ideas together each month so requests for the same column add up.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Open it on the export button

From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, an element click trigger on the export button opens the survey right after the download starts. Without the trigger, target the page where exports are made.

  2. 02

    Ask frequent exporters again

Set the survey to show again after a number of days, so a customer who exports every week can answer again after you change the export.

  3. 03

    Combine format and use

Stack answer filters in Results, such as PDF and A report for others, to see how many exports of one format serve one use.

  4. 04

    Collect requests in one place

On every plan, a workflow adds each response to a Google Sheet, so the product team can sort the missing pieces and count how often each one comes up.
