Export questions that show how users get their data out
Ask users how exporting went, which formats they need and where the data goes next. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.
What data export survey questions tell you
Data export survey questions ask users whether they have exported their data, which formats they need, how easy it was, what went wrong with the file and what they do with it afterwards. An export that times out or drops columns sends users to support, and the answers show whether to fix the file, the speed or the delivery.
Ask the export questions right after a user downloads a file, inside the product, and the portability questions in a yearly survey by email. Pick four or five per survey: the ease score, what went wrong, completeness, the formats and the open question about use.
Written answers get a theme and a type, so a broken file is filed as a bug and a request for a new format as an idea. Each response gets an owner and a status in the inbox, and the uses users describe show which reports to build inside your product.

The 14 data export and portability questions, with when to ask each
Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.
How the last export went
Ask these right after the download, while the user still has the file open.
- 01Yes / No
Have you exported your data from us?
Asks whether the user has exported data. Add logic so users who say No skip to the formats and importance questions, which still show what they would need.
- 03Customer effort
How easy was it to get your data out?
A customer effort score for getting data out. Ask it right after the download; from Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, a custom event from your code can show the survey when the export finishes.
- 04Multiple choice
What was wrong with the export, if anything?
One choice for what went wrong, from missing columns to a file too big to open. The donut shows which problem to fix first, and Nothing gives happy users a one-tap answer.
- 05Ruler
How long did you wait for your export?
The wait for the export, on a ruler from 0 to 60. The label names no unit, so add minutes to it; Results shows the median and the middle half.
- 06Stars
How complete was the exported file?
Five stars for how complete the file was. A low average next to Missing columns in the problem question points to the export template.
- 14Consent
May we keep a copy of your export for a day so support can help?
Asks the user's permission to keep a copy of the export for a day, so support can see the same file. Keep copies only for users who agree, and delete them on time.
Formats and file size
These show which formats to support and which sizes your exports must handle.
- 02Multiple choice
Which formats do you need?
Lets users pick every format they need, from CSV to a direct database sync. The bars show which formats to support first.
- 11Number
How many rows does a typical export have for you?
Rows in a typical export, typed as a number. The median and the middle half show what file sizes to test your exports with.
- 13Matrix
Rate each export option
Rates speed, file size, choosing columns and choosing a date range on one grid. The heat map shows which export option needs work first.
Scheduled and delivered exports
Ask whether users want exports to arrive on their own, how often and where.
- 07Yes / No
Do you need exports on a schedule?
Asks whether the user needs exports on a schedule. Add logic so only users who say Yes see the schedule question.
- 08Dropdown
How often should a scheduled export run?
How often a scheduled export should run, from every hour to only on request. The share of each answer sets the schedule options to offer.
- 12Text
Where would you like your exports delivered?
An open question for where exports should be delivered, such as cloud storage or a data warehouse. The answers point to the destinations worth building.
What the data is for
End with why users take data out, which points to reports and integrations worth building.
- 09Text
What do you do with the data once you have exported it?
An open question for what happens to the data after export. The answers show which reports and integrations users build elsewhere, a list of what your product could do itself.
- 10Big scale
How important is it that you can leave with your data?
How important leaving with the data is, on a ten-step scale. High scores mean buyers check portability before they sign, so describe exports on your security and pricing pages.
Tips for asking about data export and portability
Small choices that get honest, useful answers.
- 01
Ask right after the download
Show the export questions when the file is ready, while the user still has it open.
- 02
Ask about the file problem first
Lead with what went wrong. It is the answer engineering needs most, and users with a good export can answer Nothing in one tap.
- 03
Respect the consent answer
When you ask to keep a copy for support, keep it only for users who agreed, and say in the question how long it stays.
- 04
Learn what users build elsewhere
Read the answers about what users do with the data as feature requests for reports inside your product.
