Usertick
Data import survey template

See what breaks in your import, while the customer is still fixing it

Four questions for the moment an import finishes: where the data came from, how easy it was, what went wrong and what had to be fixed by hand. Usertick reads every written answer and groups the fixes into themes.

What this data import survey tells you

A data import survey asks new customers how bringing their data in went, right after the first import finishes. This template takes about a minute: the source of the data, an effort score, the problems they hit and one open question about what they had to fix or redo by hand.

It is written for your web app, as a popup on the screen that reports the finished import. Target that screen on any plan, or, from Starter or on 1 survey on Free, fire a custom event such as Usertick.trigger("import_completed") from your code, and leave the show frequency on until answered so each customer sees it once. The same survey also runs as a link in your onboarding email.

Usertick reads each written answer as it arrives and files it under a category such as getting started, with a type, a sentiment and an urgency. Results shows the effort score against the period before and the share of each source and problem, and selecting a source narrows the page to those imports.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Dropdown

Where did your data come from?

Why ask it
A spreadsheet upload, a move from another product and a load through your API fail in different ways. Knowing the source first makes every later answer easier to act on.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each source, with typed Other answers listed. Select Another product to see the effort score and problems for those migrations alone.
Make it yours
Add the products customers move from most often as options of their own, so migrations from each one get counted.
Question 2 of 4 · Customer effort

How easy was the import?

Why ask it
An import is often the first real work a customer does in your product, and a hard one colors everything after it. The effort score measures how much work it took.
What you learn
The average on the 1 to 7 scale and the share who found it easy, with a hard-to-easy bar. Select each source in the first question to compare the score per source.
Make it yours
Watch the score after every change to the importer, since the next period shows whether the change helped.
Question 3 of 4 · Multiple choice · Optional

Did anything go wrong?

Why ask it
Field matching, duplicates and date formats are the usual import failures, and customers can name them faster than they can describe them.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each problem, since customers can pick several, with the typed Other answers listed. Select Date formats to read what those customers fixed by hand.
Make it yours
Keep Nothing went wrong as an option, so the bars show how many imports went cleanly.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

What did you have to fix or redo by hand?

Why ask it
The work a customer redid by hand is the cost of your importer's gaps, in their own words, such as reformatting a column or deleting duplicates one by one.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, gives it a theme and a type such as a bug or an idea, and marks the urgent ones. Results lists them filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, and read the urgent answers the same day: a customer with missing records may need help before they give up.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Open it on the finished import

Show the survey on the result screen, from a custom event or from page targeting, so the customer answers with the imported records in front of them.

  2. 02

    Ask once per customer

Leave the show frequency on until answered, so the survey follows the first import only. Later imports are routine and tell you less.

  3. 03

    Send missing records to support

Missing records can mean lost data. On every plan, a workflow posts urgent responses to Slack or Microsoft Teams, so someone checks the import the same day.

  4. 04

Put the fixes in the backlog

On every plan, a workflow creates a Jira or Linear issue for each response or for each theme, so the importer's gaps reach the team that owns it.
