Usertick
Developer sandbox survey template

Find what your sandbox misses, before developers find it in production

Four questions for developers who just went live: how easy the sandbox was, how realistic its test data is, whether anything behaved differently in production and what. Usertick reads every written answer and groups the differences into themes.

What this sandbox survey tells you

A developer sandbox survey asks the people who built on your test environment whether it prepared them for going live. This template takes under a minute: an effort score for working in the sandbox, a rating for the test data, a yes or no on surprises in production and one open question about what behaved differently.

It is written for an email to the developers on an account when it moves from the sandbox to production. Import the developers who went live that week and send or schedule the survey from Usertick, or put its link in your go-live email or developer docs. A popup on your go-live page reaches them in your web app.

Results shows the effort score with the share who found it easy, the test data rating with the share who rated it 4 or higher, and the share who saw a difference in production. Usertick reads each written answer, gives it a theme and a type such as a bug, and marks the urgent ones.

In an email

Send it from Usertick to a contact list, with the first question inside the email. A tap on an answer opens the rest of the survey with that answer already kept. Usertick sends 50 emails a month on the free plan, or connect your own sender.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Customer effort

How easy was it to work in the sandbox?

Why ask it
Developers judge an API by how quickly they get a working call in the sandbox. The effort score measures that work while it is fresh.
What you learn
The average on the 1 to 7 scale and the share who found it easy, with a hard-to-easy bar, compared with the period before.
Make it yours
Keep it first, so a developer can tap a score inside the email and open the rest of the survey.
Question 2 of 4 · Stars

How realistic is the test data?

Why ask it
Test data that looks nothing like real data hides the edge cases developers meet on day one in production, such as long names, empty fields or other currencies.
What you learn
The average rating, a bar per star and the share who rated it 4 or higher. Select the low ratings to read what behaved differently for those developers.
Make it yours
Name the data your sandbox comes with, such as sample customers or orders, in the label, so developers rate what they used.
Question 3 of 4 · Yes / No

Did anything behave differently in production?

Why ask it
A difference between the sandbox and production is a bug in your test environment. One tap shows how often it happens.
What you learn
The share that said yes, against the period before. Select Yes to read what those developers found.
Make it yours
Add a skip so that No ends the survey, since the next question only makes sense after a Yes.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

If so, what behaved differently?

Why ask it
The exact difference, such as a rate limit, the order of webhooks or a field that only exists in production, is what your team needs to make the sandbox match.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, gives it a theme and a type such as a bug or a question, and marks the urgent ones. Results lists the answers filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Read urgent answers the same day, since a difference in production can mean a customer's live integration is failing.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How easy was it to work in the sandbox?

The average on its own scale and the share who found it easy, against the period before and by device.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Send it in the first week live

Ask within a few days of going live, while the differences are fresh and before the developer works around them.

  2. 02

Ask the developers who built it

Send it to the developers on the account, who know the sandbox from the inside. The person who signed the contract usually doesn't.

  3. 03

Add the skip after question 3

Add skip logic so that No on question 3 ends the survey, and developers without surprises answer three questions.

  4. 04

Send differences to the sandbox team

On every plan, a workflow creates a Jira or Linear issue for each response or for each theme, so the team that runs the sandbox sees every difference.

Not on its own. Usertick sends to a contact list now or on a schedule, so build a list of developers who went live each week. On every plan, a HubSpot workflow on HubSpot Professional or Enterprise can send it to each contact it enrolls.
