Design system questions that show what teams actually build with
Ask the designers and developers who use the system what fits, what is missing and how long a new screen takes. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.
What design system feedback questions tell you
Design system feedback questions ask the client's designers, developers and product managers how the system you built works in their day: whether components fit how they build, which parts of the docs are out of date, what they keep rebuilding and how long a new screen takes. A design system pays off only when teams use it, and adoption problems are hard to see from the agency side.
Ask a few weeks after launch, once teams have built real screens with it, and then each quarter. Pick five or six questions: the fit rating, the grid, the effort score for finding components and the two open questions. Put the survey on the documentation site as a side button, or share the link in the client's team channel.
Each written answer gets a type such as a bug, an idea or a question, a theme and a sentiment. On every plan, a workflow can send answers to Jira or Linear, so a missing component lands in the system's backlog.

The 13 design system work questions, with when to ask each
Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.
How the system fits
Start with fit and the grid, then whether designers can work without help, which together show whether the system is ready for the client to run.
- 01Stars
How well does the design system fit how your teams build?
A star rating for how well the system fits the way teams build. Ask it each quarter, so the client sees whether the fit improves as the system grows.
- 02Matrix
Rate the design system on each
Rates components, documentation, tokens and accessibility in one grid. The heat map shows which part of the system needs the next round of work.
- 03Yes / No
Can your designers build a new screen without asking us?
Asks whether a designer can build a new screen without help from the agency. A rising share of Yes answers is the clearest sign the handover worked.
- 07Customer effort
How easy is it to find the right component?
A customer effort score for finding the right component. A low share who found it easy points to naming and search in the docs before the components themselves.
Gaps and what comes next
Ask what is missing and what is out of date, then let teams rank what to add, so the next phase of work follows real requests.
- 04Multiple choice
What is missing from the component library?
Names the one biggest gap in the component library, from forms to empty states. Results shows each share, which tells you what to build first.
- 05Text
Which component do your teams keep rebuilding themselves?
The open question for components teams rebuild themselves. These answers point straight at gaps or components that don't fit, and each comes with a theme.
- 09Text
Which part of the documentation is out of date?
Asks which part of the documentation is out of date. Give each answer an owner in the inbox and close it when the page is fixed.
- 10Ranking
Rank what we should add to the system next
Puts more components, better docs, tokens, code examples and accessibility guidance in order. Results shows the average place of each, which becomes the next phase's priority list.
Adoption across the company
Measure who uses the system and how far it has spread, so you can show the client what the work changed.
- 06Multiple choice
Who uses the design system at your company?
Lets the client tick every group that uses the system. When marketing or outside agencies appear, plan documentation for people who don't build product.
- 08Slider
How much of your product now uses the system?
The share of the product built on the system, on a slider from 0 to 100. Results shows the median, a fair way to track adoption each quarter.
- 11Dropdown
Which design tool do your teams work in?
The design tool the client's teams work in. Results shows the share of each, which matters when you publish the library or plan a move between tools.
- 12Number
How many designers use the system each week?
How many designers use the system each week, as a number. Ask the design lead or whoever manages the system, since most designers can only answer for themselves.
- 13Ruler
How many hours does a new screen take now?
How many hours a new screen takes now, on a ruler. Ask it before launch and each quarter after, and compare the medians to show the time saved.
Tips for asking about design system work
Small choices that get honest, useful answers.
- 01
Ask the people who build
Send the survey to the designers and developers who use the system each week. Their answers are more specific than a manager's summary.
- 02
Put it on the docs site
A side button on the documentation site reaches people while they look for a component, when the problem is fresh.
- 03
Measure before and after
Ask how long a new screen takes before launch and again each quarter, so the client can see what the system changed.
- 04
Turn answers into backlog items
Give each gap or out of date page an owner in the inbox, and close it when the fix ships, so teams see their feedback acted on.
Add these questions to a survey
From the library to the first answers.
- 1
Open the library
In the Usertick survey editor, choose From library, filter by industry and topic, and add several questions at once.
- 2
Or paste your own list
Paste questions reads up to 10 questions from any text on Free, 100 on Starter and 200 on Pro and above, keeps your wording and picks an answer type for each.
- 3
Choose where it runs
Show the survey on your website, send it by email, share its link and QR code, or switch it to a conversation.
- 4
Read the answers
Results counts every score and choice, and Usertick reads each written answer and files it by topic, on every plan.
