In-kind questions that show what supporters can give besides money
Ask supporters about the goods, time and skills they give, from booking a pickup to what happens to their things. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.
What in-kind donation survey questions tell you
In-kind donation survey questions ask supporters about everything they give besides money: goods, professional skills, a van, a meeting room. Many supporters hold back because they don't know what you need or how to get it to you. Their answers show what is on offer and what makes the handover easy or hard.
Ask a day or two after a pickup or drop-off, by email or with a link in your collection confirmation, while the handover is fresh. Ask your wider supporter list once a year what they could give or lend. Pick four to six questions for each, and keep the date and contact questions for people who want a pickup.
Each written answer is read as it arrives and given a category, a theme and a sentiment, so skills on offer and complaints about a missed pickup land in separate themes. Give each offer of help an owner in the inbox, and add each one to a Google Sheet your team works from.

Tips for asking about giving goods and skills
Small choices that get honest, useful answers.
- 01
Ask soon after the handover
Send the survey within a day or two of the pickup or drop-off, while the booking and the visit are fresh.
- 02
Keep a current wish list
When supporters say they don't know what you need, publish a short list of current needs and share it with every request for goods.
- 03
Match offers of skills quickly
Give every offer of skills or space an owner within a week, since an offer that goes unanswered is easy to lose.
- 04
Thank supporters with the outcome
Tell supporters what their goods became, such as a furnished apartment or warm coats for a family, so giving goods feels like it counted.
