Members and supporters survey questions

Membership questions that show why supporters stay and why they leave

Ask members what keeps them with you, which benefits they value and whether their voice is heard. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What membership survey questions tell you

Membership survey questions ask your members and supporters why they stay, which benefits they value and whether they feel heard. A member who renews out of habit and one who renews for the community look the same on your list until one of them leaves. Their answers show what to protect and what you can drop.

Ask once a year, a month or two before renewal, by email to your member list or by link in your newsletter. Pick five or six questions for current members, and send the questions on why someone stopped to lapsed supporters in a separate survey.

Each written answer is read as it arrives and given a category, a theme, a type such as idea or complaint and a sentiment. Campaign ideas collect under their themes, and a member who sounds ready to leave gets an owner in the inbox.

The 13 members and supporters questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

How members feel about you

Start with one score, then the feeling and the year behind it, and follow the score from one year to the next.

  1. 01NPS

How likely are you to recommend joining us?

Asks how likely the member is to recommend joining. Results shows the score, the shares of detractors, passives and promoters, and the score per device. Follow it year by year.

  2. 12Emoji

How do you feel about us today?

How the member feels about the organization today, on a row of faces. It is quicker to answer than the recommend score, and Results shows each face with its share.

  3. 03Mood dial

How has the last year felt as a member?

How the last year felt as a member, on a mood dial. Results shows the faces with each share, a quick read of the year before you look at the details.

  4. 08Big scale

How well do we live up to our mission?

How well the organization lives up to its mission, from 1 to 10. A falling average can warn you that members disagree with a direction, even while renewals hold.

Why members stay

These questions show what membership means to people, which helps you decide which benefits to keep and how to ask for more.

  1. 02Multiple choice

Why do you stay a member?

Names the main reason the member stays. A large share for habit or discounts means a small price rise could cost renewals, so give those members a reason tied to the cause.

  2. 04Ranking

    Rank the benefits you value

Members put five benefits in order, from updates to the magazine. Results shows the average place per benefit, which tells you what to keep if the benefits budget shrinks.

  3. 05Yes / No

Do you feel your voice is heard?

A plain yes or no on whether the member feels heard. Select No in Results to read what those members said, and answer them in your next members update.

  4. 07Multiple choice

How do you want to be involved?

Lets members pick every way they want to take part. Results shows bars per option. Keep Just receiving updates in the list, and respect it when you plan your asks.

  5. 06Text

What should we campaign on next?

An open question for campaign ideas. Each answer arrives with its sentiment and theme, so ideas that come up again and again stand out from the one-off.

Renewing and coming back

Ask current members about renewal and lapsed supporters why they left, in separate surveys, so each group sees only the questions that fit them.

  1. 11Dropdown

How long have you supported us?

How long the person has supported you. Use it to split the other answers, since a first-year member and someone with ten years behind them want different things.

  2. 13Call to action

Renew your membership in two minutes

A closing message with a button, pointed at your renewal page. Show it at the end, after the member has told you what they value, so the ask follows the feedback.

  3. 09Multiple choice

Why did you stop supporting us?

For lapsed supporters only: the main reason they stopped. Results shows the share of each, and too many emails or no visible impact are things you can fix this year.

  4. 10Yes / No

Would you consider supporting us again?

Asks a lapsed supporter whether they would come back. Give every yes an owner in the inbox and a personal note, since these supporters already know the cause.

Tips for asking about members and supporters

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask before renewal

Send the survey a month or two before most renewals fall due, while there is still time to act on what members say.

  2. 02

    Survey lapsed supporters separately

Ask people who stopped in their own short survey, with the questions on why they left and whether they would come back.

  3. 03

    Act on the voice question

When members say they don't feel heard, share what you did with this survey's answers in the next update.

  4. 04

Keep the ask for the end

Put the renewal button last, after the questions, so members don't feel the survey was a sales pitch.

Add these questions to a survey

From the library to the first answers.

  1. 1

    Open the library

  3. 3

    Choose where it runs

Show the survey on your website, send it by email, share its link and QR code, or switch it to a conversation.
