Everyday money habits survey questions

Money habit questions that show how customers really manage the month

Ask customers how they track spending, where their money goes and how in control they feel. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What spending habits survey questions tell you

Spending habits survey questions ask customers how they keep track of money, where it goes after the bills, whether they set a budget and how in control they feel. For a bank or a budgeting app, the answers show which tools customers use, which ones they ignore and where a feature such as alerts or spending categories would help.

Ask at the start of a month, when customers look back at the last one, or after they try a budgeting feature. Show the survey on your online banking site or send it by email, pick four to six questions and keep the points question for a longer research survey.

Written answers get a category, a theme, a type and a sentiment, and each response an urgency, so feature ideas reach the product team and complaints reach support. Give each response an owner in the inbox, and send ideas to Jira or Linear.

Tips for asking about everyday money habits

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

Ask at the start of the month

Send the survey in the first days of a month, when customers have just looked back at the last one.

  2. 02

    End on the proud habit

Put the question on a habit the customer is proud of last, so they finish on something they did well.

  3. 03

    Keep the wording neutral

Word questions without judgment, so the survey reads as a way to improve the app and never as a test.

  4. 04

Ask again after a new feature

Repeat the control and insights questions after you launch a budgeting feature. Results compares each card with the period before.
