Savings goals survey questions

Savings questions that show what stands between customers and their goal

Ask customers what they are saving for, how it is going and what would help them put more aside. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What savings survey questions tell you

Savings survey questions ask customers about their goals and the habits behind them: what they are saving for, how many months of expenses they have put aside, what makes saving harder and whether your accounts and app help. The answers show where a feature such as automatic transfers or goal tracking would make a difference, and which customers are close to moving their savings for a better rate.

Ask when a customer opens a savings account or sets up a goal, and again a few months later to see how it is going. On your online banking site, show a short survey on the savings page; otherwise send it by email. Pick four to six questions, and use logic so customers who aren't saving skip the questions about goals and amounts.

Written answers get a category, a theme, a type and a sentiment, and each response an urgency, so a customer about to move their savings stands out from ideas about the app. Give those responses an owner in the inbox, and send them to Slack or Microsoft Teams.

The 14 savings goals questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

What customers are saving for

Ask whether there is a goal, what it is, when it is due and how much goes in, so every other answer can be read by goal.

  1. 01Yes / No

Are you saving toward something specific right now?

A first yes or no that sorts savers with a goal from the rest. Use logic to skip the goal questions for customers who answer No.

  2. 02Dropdown

    What are you saving for?

The goal itself, from an emergency fund to retirement. Select a goal in Results to see how on track that group feels and what makes saving harder for them.

  3. 12Date

When do you want to reach your goal?

The date the customer wants to reach the goal. Results shows a calendar of picked dates, which helps you time reminders and progress messages.

  4. 09Slider

What monthly savings amount are you aiming for?

The monthly amount the customer aims to save, on a slider up to 2,000. Results shows the median and the middle half, useful when you set default amounts in the app.

How saving is going

Measure how on track customers feel and how they save, so you can see whether automatic transfers make a difference.

  1. 03Big scale

How on track does your savings goal feel?

How on track the goal feels, on a 1 to 10 scale. Results shows the average and a column per step; compare it with the period before to see whether new tools help.

  2. 04Ruler

How many months of expenses do you have saved?

Months of expenses put aside, marked on a ruler up to 12. Results shows the median and the middle half, a picture of how much cushion your customers have.

  3. 07Multiple choice

How often do you add to savings?

How often the customer adds to savings, from every payday to not at the moment. Read it beside the automatic transfer question to see whether automation makes a difference.

  4. 08Yes / No

Do you use an automatic transfer to save?

Whether saving happens automatically. Select No in Results to read how on track manual savers feel; low scores there make the case for promoting automatic transfers.

What gets in the way

Name the obstacles and let customers say what would help, before you design the next savings feature.

  1. 05Multiple choice

    What makes saving harder?

What makes saving harder, from rising bills to low interest, with Nothing right now for customers doing fine. The bars show which problems a product could help with.

  2. 06Text

What would help you save more each month?

An open question on what would help. Answers arrive with a sentiment and a theme, so ideas such as round-ups or payday transfers group together for your product team.

Your savings accounts and tools

Rate the setup, the tools and the accounts themselves, then ask what would make a customer move their money elsewhere.

  1. 10Customer effort

How easy is it to set up a savings pot in the app?

How easy it is to set up a savings pot. Low scores point at the setup screens, and a customer who gives up there may not try again.

  2. 14Stars

How helpful are the savings tools in the app?

Stars for the savings tools in the app. Results shows the average and the share who rated 4 or higher; ask it again after you add or change a tool.

  3. 11Matrix

Rate our savings accounts on each

Interest rate, ease of access, clear terms and goal tracking in one grid. The heat map shows which part of your savings accounts customers rate lowest, with an average for each row.

  4. 13Text

What would make you move your savings to another bank?

Asks what would make a customer move their savings elsewhere. Answers that name a rate or another bank are the ones to read first and give an owner.

Tips for asking about savings goals

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

Ask when the goal is set

Send the first survey when a customer opens a savings account or creates a goal. The answers give you a starting point to compare with later.

  2. 02

Ask again a few months on

Repeat the question on how on track customers feel after three to six months. Results compares each card with the period before.

  3. 03

    Let non-savers skip ahead

Use logic so customers who aren't saving right now skip straight to what makes saving harder.

  4. 04

    Read answers about leaving first

Give answers about moving savings an owner in the inbox, so someone talks to the customer before the money leaves.
