Investing and advice survey questions

Investor questions that show whether clients trust the plan

Ask clients how confident they feel, how clear the advice is and what they expect from their money. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What investor survey questions tell you

Investor survey questions ask clients what they rarely say in a review meeting: whether they understand what they hold, how confident they are in the plan and how well the advisor listens. A client who is unsure about the plan may stay quiet through a good year and move their money after the first bad one.

Ask after a review meeting or with the yearly statement, when the plan is on the client's mind. Pick four to six questions for an email or a link in your follow-up note; the allocation and expected return questions suit a separate survey before a planning session.

Each written answer gets a category, a theme, a type and a sentiment, and each response an urgency, so a client asking for an explanation reaches the advisor quickly. In the inbox, give each response an owner and a status, and send it to HubSpot.

The 14 investing and advice questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

Confidence in the plan

Ask how sure clients feel and whether they understand what they hold, since doubt shows up here long before a transfer request.

  1. 01Big scale

How confident are you in your investment plan?

Confidence on a 1 to 10 scale, asked first. Results shows the average and a column per step; compare it with the period before after a market swing to see how far it moved.

  2. 05Yes / No

Do you understand what you are invested in?

A plain test of understanding. Select No in Results to read what those clients asked the advisor to explain, and plan the next review around it.

  3. 12Emoji

How do you feel about your finances today?

How the client feels about their finances today, on a row of faces. It can be answered inside an email Usertick sends, so it works as an opening question.

How the advisor is doing

Put the recommend score beside the clarity rating and the grid, then let clients say what they want explained.

  1. 10NPS

How likely are you to recommend your advisor?

The recommend question for the advisor. Results shows the score, detractors, passives and promoters, and the split per device; ask it once or twice a year to follow the trend.

  2. 02Stars

How clear was the advice you received?

Stars for how clear the latest advice was. A low average beside a No on understanding the investments points to explanations that need simpler words.

  3. 04Matrix

    Rate your advisor on each

Listening, clarity, responsiveness and results in one grid. The heat map shows each row with its average, so you can see whether a weak score is about service or about returns.

  4. 07Text

What would you like your advisor to explain?

The open question on what the client wants explained. Answers come with a theme, so a cluster on fees or tax tells you what to cover in the next client letter.

What clients want from investing

Learn the trade-offs, topics and returns clients have in mind, so the next review starts from their priorities.

  1. 03This or that

In investing, what matters more to you?

Two trade-offs: growth or safety, and low fees or personal advice. Results shows a split bar per pair, a quick check on whether the plan still matches what clients say they want.

  2. 09Multiple choice

    Which topics interest you?

Topics clients want to hear about, from retirement to crypto. The bars in Results show which topics to cover first in events or client letters.

  3. 13Points allocation

How would you split a new investment?

Clients split points across stocks, bonds, cash, property and other assets. Results shows the average points per item, a picture of appetite to compare with the plan you recommend.

  4. 14Slider

What yearly return do you expect?

Expected yearly return, from 0 to 20. A median well above what the plan is built for tells you which clients need a talk about expectations before the next review.

How clients invest today

Ask how often they check, how much is invested and for how long, so you can read every other answer by experience.

  1. 06Multiple choice

How often do you check your portfolio?

How often clients look at their portfolio, from daily to rarely. Select Daily in Results to see whether frequent checkers feel less confident than the rest.

  2. 08Slider

What share of your savings is invested?

Share of savings invested, from 0 to 100. Results shows the median and the middle half, which helps you plan the conversation about cash held elsewhere.

  3. 11Dropdown

How long have you been investing?

How long the client has been investing. Choose a band in Results, since someone in their first year needs different explanations from a client of ten years.

Tips for asking about investing and advice

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask after the review meeting

Send the survey within a day or two of a review, while the client remembers what was said. The answers then measure the meeting and the advice together.

  2. 02

Give each advisor their own scores

Send one survey per advisor, or add a dropdown asking which advisor the client works with, so each advisor reads their own results.

  3. 03

Follow up on a No to understanding

When a client says they don't understand what they hold, give the response an owner in the inbox and book a short call.

  4. 04

Ask at the same point each year

Send the confidence question at the same time each year or quarter. Results compares each card with the period before, so a drop after a rough quarter stands out.

Add these questions to a survey

From the library to the first answers.

  1. 1

Paste questions reads up to 10 questions from any text on Free, 100 on Starter and 200 on Pro and above, keeps your wording and picks an answer type for each.

  3. 3

    Choose where it runs

Show the survey on your website, send it by email, share its link and QR code, or switch it to a conversation.

  4. 4
