Tax questions that show where filing turned into a scramble
Ask filers how this year's return went, from finding documents to meeting the deadline. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.
What tax filing survey questions tell you
Tax filing survey questions ask customers how this year's return went: how they filed, how many hours it took, what was hardest and how confident they are that it is correct. For tax software, a preparer or a bank with filing tools, the answers show where people got stuck while there is still time to fix it before next season.
Ask within a few days of filing, while the forms are fresh, and again after the deadline for customers who filed late. In your web app, show the survey after the return is submitted, using a custom event from your code (from Starter, or on 1 survey on Free), or send it by email. Pick four to six questions.
Written answers get a category, a theme, a type and a sentiment, and each response an urgency, so a customer worried about an error reaches support during the season. Give those responses an owner in the inbox, and open an issue in Jira or Linear for the product team.

Tips for asking about tax season
Small choices that get honest, useful answers.
- 01
Ask right after filing
Show or send the survey within a few days of filing. After the deadline, customers remember the stress and forget the step.
- 02
Keep it short in season
Use four or five questions. Customers have just finished a long return and have little patience for another form.
- 03
Ask late filers on their own
Send a short survey after the deadline to customers who filed late, with the hardest part and the reminders question.
- 04
Plan next season from the answers
Read the themes in the confusing rules and scramble answers before you plan next year's help content and reminder dates.
