Concept testing survey template

Test the idea with real users, before you build it

Seven questions around one product idea: how hard the task is today, the hardest part, how valuable the idea would be, what would make it useful and who wants to try it before release. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this concept testing survey tells you

A concept testing survey shows people an idea and measures how much they want it, before you build it. This template uses a client reporting feature as the example and takes under two minutes: an effort score for sending reports to clients today and the hardest part of it, then a message screen that presents the idea, a value rating, why it wouldn't be valuable, what would make it most useful, and whether they want to try it early, with an email for access.

It is written for a popup in your web app, shown to active users who have the problem, for example on the reports page or, from Starter, by traits passed with Usertick.identify(). The same survey runs as an email Usertick sends to a contact list, where the effort question sits inside the email, or as a link in your community.

Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category and a theme from your list, and marks it as an idea, a complaint or a question. Results shows the effort average with the share who found it easy, the value rating with the share who rated 4 or higher, the share who want early access and a table of their emails.

The 7 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 7 · Customer effort

How easy is it to send reports to your clients today?

Why ask it
Measuring today's effort before showing the idea gives you a baseline: if the task is already easy, a new feature has little to fix.
What you learn
The average on the 1 to 7 scale, the share who found it easy and a hard-to-easy bar. Select the hard end to see how those users rate the idea.
Make it yours
Rewrite it for your own problem and keep the task concrete, such as send an invoice or book a room.
Question 2 of 7 · Text · Optional

What's the hardest part of it?

Why ask it
The hardest part, written before people see your idea, keeps the answer free of your framing.
What you learn
Usertick gives each answer a theme from your list and a sentiment, and lists the answers filterable by theme, so the most common pain sits next to the idea's score.
Make it yours
Compare the top themes with what your idea fixes; a gap means the idea solves a different problem.
Question 3 of 7 · Stars

How valuable would this be to you?

Why ask it
The value rating comes right after the message screen that presents the idea, so people judge it with the description fresh. Ratings of 1 or 2 go to question 4 to ask why.
What you learn
The average on five stars, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher. Select the 4 and 5 ratings to read what those users want in question 5.
Make it yours
Question 4 comes next anyway, so add a fallback that sends every other rating to question 5, and only the low raters see the question about why it wouldn't be valuable.
Question 4 of 7 · Text · Optional

Why wouldn't it be valuable to you?

Why ask it
People who don't value the idea tell you whether it misses the problem, adds work or repeats a tool they already have.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer and gives it a theme and a type, such as a complaint or a question, so objections that repeat group together.
Make it yours
Read these before the high ratings: a common objection is cheaper to fix now than after launch.
Question 5 of 7 · Text · Optional

What would make it most useful to you?

Why ask it
Asking what would make the idea most useful gets the must-haves for the first version, in users' own words.
What you learn
Usertick gives each answer a theme and a type, filterable by theme, so requests such as a PDF export or the client's own branding group together.
Make it yours
Turn the top two or three themes into the scope of your first version.
Question 6 of 7 · Yes / No

Would you like to try it before it's released?

Why ask it
Asking to try it before release separates polite interest from real demand. A No ends the survey, so only volunteers see the contact question.
What you learn
The share that said yes. Choose Yes to read what those users want from the idea.
Make it yours
Keep the rule that ends the survey on No, so nobody is asked for details they didn't offer.
Question 7 of 7 · Contact · Optional

Where should we send early access?

Why ask it
The contact question collects where to send early access, so your beta starts with people who asked for it.
What you learn
A table of names and emails; each email becomes a contact in Usertick, ready to add to a beta list.
Make it yours
Turn on only name and email, and send a beta feedback survey to that list once the feature ships.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Describe the idea plainly

Write the message screen in two or three sentences on what the feature does and for whom, and add a picture of the mockup.

  2. 02

Ask the people with the problem

Show it on the page where the task happens, such as the reports page, so the people answering do the task today.

  3. 03

    Fix the value branch

Add a fallback on question 3 that sends ratings of 3 and above to question 5, so people who like the idea skip the question about why they don't.

  4. 04

    Test one idea per survey

Duplicate the survey for a second idea, so each idea gets its own results and the scores don't mix.

There is no fixed bar. Look at the share who rated 4 or higher, the share who want to try it early and whether the answers about the hardest part match what the idea fixes.
