Using the app offline survey questions

Offline questions that show what breaks when the signal drops

Ask users where they lose signal, what they need to work without it and how the app copes on a weak connection. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What offline app survey questions tell you

Offline app survey questions ask users how your app behaves when the connection drops: how often it happens, where, what they need to keep working and what went wrong last time. Testing on office Wi-Fi rarely shows the train tunnel or the basement, and these answers fill that gap.

Users answer once they are back online, so ask about the last time they were offline. Usertick doesn't run inside phone apps, so open the survey's link from the app when the connection returns, or send it by email. Pick four to six questions and use logic to skip the rest for users who never go offline.

Each written answer about a failed task or lost work gets a type such as bug or complaint, a theme and a sentiment, with an urgency for the response. The inbox gives each response an owner and a status, so a user who lost work gets a reply.

The 15 using the app offline questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

How often users go offline

Start here to size the problem: who loses signal, where and for how long.

  1. 01Yes / No

Do you ever use the app without a connection?

A yes or no that sorts users who ever lose connection from the rest. Add logic to skip the offline questions for users who answer No, so they finish in one tap.

  2. 02Multiple choice

Where do you most often lose signal?

Where users most often lose signal, from a train to a basement. Results shows each share, which tells you whether to plan for short drops or long stretches offline.

  3. 08Big scale

How much of your use happens on a poor connection?

How much of the user's time is on a poor connection, from 1 to 10. Results shows the average and a column per step, so you can see how many users depend on offline support most.

  4. 09Ruler

How many minutes a day are you offline with the app open?

Minutes a day offline with the app open, on a ruler from 0 to 120. Results shows the median and the middle half, a fair figure when a few users travel all day.

How the app copes with a weak connection

These questions rate what happens today, from slow lists to lost work, with the details engineers need.

  1. 04Stars

How well does the app cope with a weak connection?

Rates how the app behaves on a weak connection, on five stars. Read it beside the grid to see which part of the app pulls the rating down.

  2. 13Matrix

Rate how each part works on a weak connection

Rates opening the app, loading lists, uploading and search on a weak connection. The heat map and row averages show which part to fix first.

  3. 05Yes / No

Have you lost work when the connection dropped?

A yes or no on lost work when the connection dropped. Give every Yes an owner in the inbox, and read the open question beside it for what was lost.

  4. 06Customer effort

How easy is it to tell what is saved and what is not?

A customer effort score for telling saved from unsaved, on a 7 point scale. A low score means users can't see the state of their work, even when nothing was lost.

  5. 14Screenshot

Capture the error you see when the connection drops

A capture of the error users see. From your phone app, use File upload so users can attach a screenshot they took while offline. The Screenshot question captures a web page and fits your web app. Both are on every plan, and Free allows 1 of them per survey.

What users need without signal

Ask what must work offline and what users would keep on the phone, before you decide what to store.

  1. 03Multiple choice

What do you need to work offline?

Lets users tick what must work without a connection. Results shows a bar with the share for each, a list to plan offline support from.

  2. 07Text

What did you try to do offline that failed?

The task that failed offline, in the user's own words. AI reading files each answer under a theme, so the same failing task shows up as one group.

  3. 11Text

What would you want saved on your phone before you go offline?

What users would want saved on the phone before they go offline. Read it beside the needs question, since the open answers name the exact items behind each ticked box.

  4. 12Number

How many items would you keep downloaded?

How many items users would keep downloaded, from 0 to 500. Results shows the median and the middle half, a starting point for storage limits.

What the app should do offline

Two questions that set the default behavior when the connection goes, read best after users have described their needs.

  1. 10Dropdown

What should the app do when it goes offline?

What the app should do when it goes offline, from saving quietly to warning right away. Results shows each share, a default to design for.

  2. 15This or that

When the connection is bad you would rather

Waiting for fresh data or seeing older saved data. Results shows the split, which settles how the app should behave when the connection is weak.

Tips for asking about using the app offline

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

Ask once users are back online

The survey needs a connection to load and send, so ask about the last time users were offline instead of during it.

  2. 02

Skip the rest for always-online users

Add logic to the first question so users who never lose connection finish in one tap.

  3. 03

    Read lost work first

Answers about lost work carry the highest urgency. Give each one an owner in the inbox and reply.

  4. 04

Ask before you build offline support

Run the needs question before you decide what to store on the phone, so you save the items users asked for.

Add these questions to a survey

From the library to the first answers.

  1. 1

    Open the library

In the Usertick survey editor, choose From library, filter by industry and topic, and add several questions at once.

  2. 2

    Or paste your own list

Paste questions reads up to 10 questions from any text on Free, 100 on Starter and 200 on Pro and above, keeps your wording and picks an answer type for each.

  3. 3

    Choose where it runs

Show the survey on your website, send it by email, share its link and QR code, or switch it to a conversation.

  4. 4

    Read the answers

Results counts every score and choice, and Usertick reads each written answer and files it by topic, on every plan.
