Usertick
Tablet experience survey template

Learn how your app works on a tablet, from landscape to the keyboard

Three questions for tablet users after their third session: a star rating for the app on a tablet, a score for landscape, split view, keyboard use and drag and drop, and what is missing. Usertick reads every written answer and groups the gaps users name.

What this tablet experience survey tells you

A tablet experience survey asks the people who use your app on a large screen whether it feels made for it or stretched from a phone. This template takes about a minute: a 5-star rating, a grid that scores four tablet features from poor to excellent, and one open question on what is missing.

It is written for users on a tablet after their third session. In a web app, device targeting limits it to tablets on every plan, and a custom event your code fires each session, with calls needed set to 3, opens it on the third (from Starter, or on 1 survey on Free). Inside a phone app running on a tablet, have the app open the survey's link after the third session.

Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category such as features and gaps or ease of use, and marks it as an idea, a bug or a complaint. Results shows the average star rating with the share who rated 4 or higher, a heat map per feature with row averages, and every written gap, against the period before.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Stars

How would you rate the app on a tablet?

Why ask it
One overall rating tells you whether tablet users feel well served before the grid asks about the details, and it is the number to track after each tablet release.
What you learn
Results shows the average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, against the period before. Select 1 or 2 stars to read what those users say is missing.
Make it yours
Keep the targeting on tablets, so phone users never rate a layout they haven't seen.
Question 2 of 3 · Matrix · Optional

How well does each of these work?

Why ask it
Tablet complaints tend to come down to a few features, and a grid scores all four on one screen, so you see whether landscape works while split view lags.
What you learn
A heat map per row shows how answers spread from Poor to Excellent, with an average for each row, so the weakest feature is the row with the lowest average.
Make it yours
Replace a row with a feature your app supports, such as stylus input or an external display, and remove rows your app doesn't offer.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What's missing on the tablet?

Why ask it
Users who chose a tablet often want something the phone layout never needed, such as a second column, a side panel or keyboard shortcuts, and the open question names it.
What you learn
Each answer appears with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, and up to 8 themes show with their trends, so keyboard shortcuts or a wider layout show up as themes of their own.
Make it yours
Read these answers next to the lowest row in the grid, since they often explain the score.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How would you rate the app on a tablet?

How well does each of these work?

Each row's answers side by side, so the part that needs work stands out.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Target tablets only

Set device targeting to tablet in your web app, and open the link only on tablets from your phone app, so every answer comes from a large screen.

  2. 02

    Wait for real use

Ask after the third session, once users have tried the app in both orientations and with the features they need.

  3. 03

    Fix the weakest row

Start with the row that has the lowest average in the heat map, then compare it with the period before after the fix ships.

  4. 04

Ask again after a tablet release

When you ship a tablet layout or keyboard support, run the survey for another period and compare the star rating with the one before.

Frequently asked questions

After a user's third session on a tablet, when they have used the app enough to judge the layout, and again after a release aimed at tablets.

Yes. Device targeting on every plan limits a website survey to tablets. In your phone app, open the survey's link only when the app runs on a tablet.

Usertick runs on websites and in web apps, and doesn't run inside a phone app. Your app can open the survey's link instead, which shows the hosted survey page.

Read the written answers for mentions of split view, which Usertick groups by theme, fix the layout they describe and compare the row's average in the next period.

Three, as here: a rating, one grid and an optional open question. The grid covers four features on one screen, so the survey stays at about a minute.
