Usertick
Home screen widget survey

Find out what your widget should show, a week after it ships

Three quick questions for a new home screen widget: whether users added it, what they want on it and how often they glance at it. Usertick reads every typed Other idea and files it under a theme for your team.

What this home screen widget survey tells you

A home screen widget survey asks users whether they put your app's widget on their phone and what would make it worth the space. This template takes about 30 seconds: a yes or no on adding it, a multiple choice on what it should show, and how often they look at it.

It is written for a week after the widget ships, when users have had time to find it. Email suits it well, since the question is about the phone itself: send it to a list of active users and the yes or no sits inside the message. Inside your phone app, have the app open the survey's link from the release notes or the widget settings, and on your web app or mobile site a popup reaches the same users.

Results shows the share who added the widget, bars for each thing it should show with every typed Other answer listed, and a donut of how often users look at it, each against the period before. Choose Yes to see what users who added it want next. Usertick reads every typed answer and files it under a theme from your list.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Yes / No

Have you added our widget to your home screen?

Why ask it
Adoption comes first. If few users added the widget, the problem is discovery, and what it shows can wait until people find it.
What you learn
Results shows the share that said yes, against the period before, so you see whether a tip in the app or the release notes raised it.
Make it yours
Add an optional question that skip logic shows only to users who said No, asking how they expected to find the widget.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What should the widget show?

Why ask it
Users who added the widget and users who didn't both know what they would glance at, and letting them pick several shows what earns the space.
What you learn
Bars show the share and count of each choice, with every typed Other answer listed. Select Yes on question 1 to see what users who already have the widget want it to show.
Make it yours
Replace the options with what your app can actually put on a widget, such as today's balance, the next booking or a streak.
Question 3 of 3 · Dropdown · Optional

How often do you look at it?

Why ask it
A widget users look at many times a day deserves more design time than one they forgot, and the answer shows whether the current version earns its glances.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each frequency, and over time the shares stack. Select Rarely or Never to see what those users want the widget to show instead.
Make it yours
Ask again after you change what the widget shows, and compare the share who look at it daily with the period before.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Wait a week

Give users a week to discover the widget before you ask. Earlier, many answers to the first question are No only because people haven't found it.

  2. 02

    Send it by email

The question is about the phone's home screen, so email reaches users wherever they use the app, and the yes or no sits inside the message.

  3. 03

    Keep it to active users

Send it to users who opened the app in the last month. People who stopped using the app won't know the widget exists.

  4. 04

    Ship the top request

Build the choice with the largest share among users who added the widget, then ask again to see whether daily glances went up.

Frequently asked questions

About a week after it ships, and again after you change what it shows.

Usertick runs on websites and in web apps. For a phone app, open the survey's link from the app, or send the survey by email so users can answer the first question inside the message.

Then the first job is discovery. Show users how to add it, in a tip or the release notes, and ask again after a few weeks to compare the share that said yes.

Active users of your phone app, by email or from a link in the app. Users who only use your web app have no home screen widget to judge.

Yes. Add an optional text question at the end, such as what would make the widget worth keeping, and Usertick reads each answer and files it under a theme.

Yes. Every template comes with every plan, the free plan included, and the free plan covers 150 responses a month across your surveys.
