Usertick
Offline mode survey template

Learn what users need offline, and how syncing holds up after

Three quick questions for the moment the app is back online: what users need to do without a connection, whether anything stopped working and how well their data synced. Usertick reads every typed Other answer and marks the ones that report a bug.

What this offline mode survey tells you

An offline mode survey asks users what they expect from your app without a connection and how well it catches up afterward. This template takes about 30 seconds: the tasks they need offline, whether anything stopped working, and a star rating for how their data synced when they reconnected.

It is written for the moment the app comes back online after a gap. In a web app, your code can fire a custom event when the connection returns and the survey opens (from Starter, or on 1 survey on Free), and an answer sent on a weak connection waits in the browser and retries for up to 7 days. Inside a phone app, have the app open the survey's link once it reconnects.

Results shows bars for each offline task with every typed Other answer listed, the share who said something stopped working, and the average star rating with the share who rated 4 or higher, against the period before. Select Yes on question 2 to read the tasks and sync ratings of users who hit a problem. Usertick reads each typed answer and files it under a category such as speed and reliability.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What do you need to do offline?

Why ask it
Offline support is costly to build, and the tasks users really need without a connection tell your team which ones to build first. Nothing lets users who never work offline answer in one tap.
What you learn
Bars show the share and count of each task, with every typed Other answer listed. Select Add new entries to see how those users rated syncing.
Make it yours
Rename the tasks to match your app, such as logging a workout, scanning a receipt or reading a saved article.
Question 2 of 3 · Yes / No

Did anything stop working while you were offline?

Why ask it
A clear yes or no on whether something stopped working separates a smooth offline session from one that left the user stuck. It is required, so every response carries the answer.
What you learn
Results shows the share that said yes, against the period before. A rise after a release points to a feature that lost its offline support.
Make it yours
Add an optional text question after it, which skip logic shows only to users who said Yes, so they can name what stopped working.
Question 3 of 3 · Stars

How well did your data sync when you reconnected?

Why ask it
Syncing is where offline use can lose data, and a 5-star rating for the reconnect shows whether entries arrived intact or users had to fix duplicates and gaps.
What you learn
Results shows the average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher. Select a low rating to read what those users needed offline.
Make it yours
Set a workflow (every plan) that posts every rating of 1 or 2 to Slack or Microsoft Teams, since a bad sync can mean lost data.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How well did your data sync when you reconnected?

The average rating and the share who gave 4 or 5 stars, against the period before.

What do you need to do offline?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask after a real gap

Open the survey only after the app was offline long enough to matter, such as a few minutes, so every answer comes from a real offline session.

  2. 02

    Build the top task first

Rank the offline tasks by share and add support for the top one before the rest. Select each task in Results to see how often it ended with something broken.

  3. 03

    Watch sync after each release

Compare the sync rating with the period before after every release that touches storage or sync, and treat a drop as a bug.

  4. 04

    Tag the connection

When the app opens the survey's link, add the connection the user returned on, such as ?network=cellular, so each answer keeps it in Google Sheets and webhooks.

Frequently asked questions

Right after the app reconnects, while the user still remembers what they tried to do offline. Ask once per user, and again after a release that changes syncing.

Usertick runs on websites and in web apps, so a phone app opens the survey's link once it is back online. In a web app, a custom event from your code can open the survey (from Starter, or on 1 survey on Free).

Treat each low sync rating as urgent. Give the response an owner in the inbox, check the user's records and look for the release or device the reports have in common.

The survey needs a connection to load. In a web app, an answer sent on a weak connection waits in the browser and retries for up to 7 days.

Start with the task the largest share of users chose, then check how those users rated syncing. A task that many need and that syncs poorly comes first.
