Dark mode survey template

Find the screens that still look wrong, in light and dark mode

Three questions after a design update: which appearance users pick, how the app looks in it and the one screen that still looks off. Usertick reads every written answer and groups the screens your users name.

What this dark mode survey tells you

A dark mode survey asks users how your app looks in the appearance they actually use. This template takes under a minute: light, dark or following the phone's setting, a star rating for how the app looks in that mode, and an open question that names the screen still looking wrong.

It is written for the days after a design update, when users notice what changed. In a web app, it opens as a popup after a short delay or a few pages viewed, on every plan. Inside a phone app, have the app open the survey's link from the release notes screen or the appearance settings. It also goes by email to a contact list, with the first question inside the message.

Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category such as ease of use or features and gaps with a theme from your list, and marks it as a bug, an idea or a complaint. Results shows the share of each appearance, the average star rating with the share who rated 4 or higher, and every screen users named, against the period before.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice

Which appearance do you use?

Why ask it
The rating only means something once you know which mode it describes, and users who follow their phone's setting may see both modes in one day. Three plain options cover every case.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each appearance, and over time the shares stack. Select Dark to filter the whole page to dark mode users and read their rating and screens.
Make it yours
Match the option names to the words in your app's own appearance setting, so users pick the one they chose.
Question 2 of 3 · Stars

How does the app look in that mode?

Why ask it
A star rating for the mode the user just picked turns a vague sense that something looks off into a number you can track after each design fix.
What you learn
Results shows the average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher. Select Dark and then Light on question 1 to compare the two modes.
Make it yours
Run the survey again after a design fix and compare the share who rated 4 or higher with the period before.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

Which screen still looks wrong?

Why ask it
Designers can't check every screen in both modes, and users find the settings page with gray text on black or the chart that vanished. One optional question gets the names.
What you learn
Each answer appears with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, and up to 8 themes show with their trends, so a screen named again and again stands out.
Make it yours
In your web app, switch on Allow screenshot for this text question (1 per survey on Free), so users can mark up the screen they mean.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How does the app look in that mode?

The average rating and the share who gave 4 or 5 stars, against the period before.

Which appearance do you use?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask after the update ships

Run it in the first week after a design update, when users notice changes and your designers still have the work fresh.

  2. 02

Read each mode on its own

Select Light, then Dark, in Results to read each mode's rating and screens separately. A combined average can hide a mode that looks wrong.

  3. 03

    Name screens users know

Add a placeholder such as Settings, Profile or the chart on Home, so answers name screens the way your team does.

  4. 04

    Send screen reports to design

A workflow (every plan) posts answers marked as a bug to a Slack channel for your designers, and it can open a Jira or Linear issue instead.

Frequently asked questions

In the first week after a design update or after you add dark mode, and again after you fix the screens users named.

Usertick runs on websites and in web apps, so a phone app opens the survey's link instead, for example from the appearance settings screen. The same survey also runs in your web app with the script.
