Home screen widgets survey questions

Widget questions that show what earns a place on the home screen

Ask users what a widget should show, which size and spot they would give it and how your current widget works. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What home screen widget survey questions tell you

Home screen widget survey questions ask users whether a widget earns a place on their screen: what it should show, which size and spot they would give it and how your current widget performs. A widget users keep brings them back every day, and one they remove was wasted work.

Ask before you build a widget and again a few weeks after users add it. Usertick doesn't run inside phone apps, so send the survey's link by email or open it from the app's settings. Pick four to six questions, and use the first one to move users who never use widgets past the rest.

Each written answer gets a theme, a type such as idea or complaint, and a sentiment, so requests for the same content group together in Results. The inbox gives each response an owner and a status, so a widget that stopped refreshing gets followed up.

The 14 home screen widgets questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

Whether users want a widget

Ask these before you build, to see whether widgets fit the way your users already use their phone.

  1. 01Yes / No

Do you use any widgets on your home screen?

A yes or no on widgets in general. Select No in Results to see what those users said elsewhere, before you build for a habit they don't have.

  2. 09Number

How many widgets do you keep on your phone?

How many widgets a user keeps, from 0 to 30. Results shows the median and the middle half, which tells you how much room your widget competes for.

  3. 10Big scale

How much do widgets decide which apps you open?

How much widgets decide which apps the user opens, from 1 to 10. A high average makes the case for investing in a widget at all.

  4. 11Text

What do you check on your phone before you open any app?

What users check before they open any app, in their own words. The answers name a glance users already make, a strong candidate for your widget.

What the widget should show

Content, priority, size and placement together give the team a brief for the first version.

  1. 02Multiple choice

What would you want a widget to show?

Lets users tick what a widget should show, from a summary of today to the next reminder. Results shows a bar with the share for each, a short list for the first version.

  2. 12Ranking

Rank what a widget should do first

Users put five widget jobs in order, from a number at a glance to low battery use. Results shows the average place per item, which settles what the first version must do.

  3. 03Multiple choice

Which widget size would you use?

The size users would give the widget, including the lock screen. Results shows each share, which tells you which sizes to design first.

  4. 08Dropdown

Where would you put our widget?

Where users would place the widget, from the first home screen to nowhere. A large share for nowhere tells you to read what would change their mind.

How the current widget performs

Ask users who have added the widget how useful it is, how it refreshes and what would make them keep it.

  1. 04Stars

How useful is our widget to you?

Rates your current widget on five stars. Send it to users who have added the widget, for example from a link in its settings, so the average comes from real use.

  2. 13Matrix

    Rate our widget

Rates usefulness, refresh, looks and size options in one grid. The heat map and row averages show which part of the widget to improve first.

  3. 05Customer effort

How easy was the widget to add?

A customer effort score for adding the widget, on a 7 point scale. A low score points to a step users can't find, which a short guide in the app can fix.

  4. 06Yes / No

Does the widget refresh often enough?

A yes or no on refresh. Select No in Results to read those users' open answers, since a stale number gives users a reason to remove the widget.

  5. 07Text

What would make the widget worth keeping?

What would earn the widget a permanent place, in the user's own words. AI reading files each answer under a theme, so repeated requests group together.

  6. 14Screenshot

Show us your home screen setup if you are happy to

A picture of the user's home screen, if they agree. Use File upload so users can attach a screenshot from their photos, since the Screenshot question captures a web page. File upload is on every plan, 1 per survey on Free.

Tips for asking about home screen widgets

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask before you build

Run the content and ranking questions before you design the widget, so the first version shows what users asked for.

  2. 02

    Ask users who added it

Open the survey's link from the widget's settings screen, so the rating questions reach users who have it on their screen.

  3. 03

    Move non-users along quickly

Add logic to the first question so users who never use widgets skip the questions about your current one.

  4. 04

    Follow refresh complaints

Give every answer about stale data an owner in the inbox, and ask again once the fix ships.

Add these questions to a survey

From the library to the first answers.

  1. 1

    Open the library

In the Usertick survey editor, choose From library, filter by industry and topic, and add several questions at once.

  2. 2

    Or paste your own list

Paste questions reads up to 10 questions from any text on Free, 100 on Starter and 200 on Pro and above, keeps your wording and picks an answer type for each.

  3. 3

    Choose where it runs

Show the survey on your website, send it by email, share its link and QR code, or switch it to a conversation.

  4. 4

    Read the answers

Results counts every score and choice, and Usertick reads each written answer and files it by topic, on every plan.
