Sync across devices survey questions

Sync questions that show where work gets lost between devices

Ask users which devices they switch between, how reliable sync feels and what goes missing on the way. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What sync survey questions tell you

Sync survey questions ask users who move between a phone, a tablet and a computer whether their work follows them: how easy it is to pick up where they left off, what goes wrong when they switch and how much they trust it. One lost change can undo a lot of trust, and these answers find the gaps first.

Ask users who sign in from more than one device, a few weeks after a sync change or when complaints rise. Usertick doesn't run inside phone apps, so send the survey's link by email or open it from the app, and show it as a popup on your web app. Pick four to six questions.

Each written answer about missing work gets a type, a theme, a sentiment and an urgency, so lost changes reach the inbox first. On every plan, a workflow can open a Jira or Linear issue with the user's words attached.

The 14 sync across devices questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

Which devices users switch between

Start with the devices and where work begins, so you test the combinations your users have.

  1. 01Yes / No

Do you use this app on more than one device?

A yes or no that sorts multi-device users from the rest. Add logic to skip the sync questions for users who use one device.

  2. 02Number

How many devices do you sign in from?

How many devices the user signs in from, from 1 to 10. Results shows the median and the middle half, which tells you how many devices sync has to keep in step.

  3. 07Multiple choice

Which devices do you keep the app on?

Lets users tick every device they keep the app on, including a shared family device. Results shows a bar with the share for each, so you test the devices users have.

  4. 08Yes / No

Do you use the web version as well as the app?

Whether the user also uses the web version. Select Yes in Results to see whether users who switch to the web report more sync trouble than the rest.

  5. 11Dropdown

Where do you start most of your work?

Where users start most work, from the phone to a computer. Results shows each share, which tells you which device to make the fastest starting point.

How reliable sync feels

These questions rate sync and the trust behind it, the numbers to follow after each sync change.

  1. 03Customer effort

How easy is it to pick up where you left off on another device?

A customer effort score for picking up on another device, on a 7 point scale. Results shows the average and the share who found it easy, the headline number for sync.

  2. 05Stars

How reliable is sync for you?

Rates how reliable sync is, on five stars. Follow it release by release, since Results compares each card with the period before.

  3. 10Big scale

How much do you trust your work to be saved everywhere?

How much users trust their work to be saved everywhere, from 1 to 10. A low average with few reported losses points to sync that works but doesn't show that it did.

  4. 13Matrix

Rate sync on each of these

Rates speed, reliability, two edits at once and what sync covers, in one grid. The heat map and row averages show where sync falls short.

  5. 06Ruler

How many seconds should a change take to reach your other device?

How quickly a change should arrive, on a ruler from 0 to 60 seconds. Results shows the median and the middle half, a target to test against.

When sync goes wrong

Ask what breaks when users switch and what went missing, with the detail engineers need.

  1. 04Multiple choice

What goes wrong when you switch devices?

What goes wrong when users switch, from late changes to two copies. Results shows each share, and selecting one filters the page to the users who hit it.

  2. 09Text

What went missing between your devices?

What went missing, in the user's own words. Give each answer an owner in the inbox, since lost work needs both a reply and a fix.

Conflicts and privacy

Ask how the app should settle two edits and what should stay on the phone, before you widen sync.

  1. 14This or that

If two devices disagree you would rather

Keep the newest change or be asked. Results shows the split, which settles how the app should handle two edits that disagree.

  2. 12Text

What should never leave your phone?

What the user wants kept on the phone only, in their own words. Read these before you add more to sync, and offer a way to keep those items local.

Tips for asking about sync across devices

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask multi-device users only

Ask the first question of everyone and add logic so only users with more than one device see the rest.

  2. 02

Reach users on the web too

Show the survey as a popup on your web app as well as by email, so users who switch there can answer in the moment.

  3. 03

    Reply to lost work first

Give every answer about missing work an owner and a status in the inbox, and reply before the user stops trusting sync.

  4. 04

    Ask before you change conflicts

Run the conflict question before you change how the app handles two edits, so the new default matches what users want.
