Scanning questions that show where the camera loses your users
Ask users what they capture in the app, what goes wrong with a scan and what they still type in by hand. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.
What camera and scanning survey questions tell you
Camera and scanning survey questions ask users how the camera inside your app works for them: what they capture, how often a scan fails, how long it takes and what they still type in by hand. A scan that fails twice sends users back to typing, and these answers show where the camera loses them.
Ask users who have used the camera in the last few weeks, and again after you change the capture screen. Usertick doesn't run inside phone apps, so send the survey's link by email or open it from the app after a scan. Pick four to six questions, starting with what users scan.
Each written answer gets a type, a theme and a sentiment, so requests for the same document or code group together. The file upload question attaches a sample to the response with its location data removed, and the inbox gives each response an owner.

The 14 camera and scanning questions, with when to ask each
Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.
How users use the camera
Start with what users capture and how many photos at a time, so you improve the mode they use most.
- 01Yes / No
Have you used the camera inside the app?
A yes or no on using the camera inside the app. Add logic to skip the scanning questions for users who answer No.
- 02Multiple choice
What do you use the camera for here?
Lets users tick what they use the camera for, from photos to codes. Results shows a bar with the share for each, which tells you which mode to improve first.
- 10Dropdown
How many photos do you add at once?
How many photos users add at once, from one to dozens. A share at the top end tells you batch capture is worth building.
- 08Yes / No
Would you rather pick a photo you already have?
Whether users would rather pick a photo they already have. A high share of Yes tells you to put the photo picker beside the camera button.
How well scanning works
These questions rate the scan and name what goes wrong, from focus to low light.
- 03Customer effort
How easy was it to scan something?
A customer effort score for scanning, on a 7 point scale. Results shows the average and the share who found it easy, a number to follow after camera changes.
- 04Multiple choice
What went wrong with the scan?
What went wrong with the scan, from focus to reading the wrong thing. Results shows each share, and selecting one filters the page to the users who hit that problem.
- 06Ruler
How many seconds does a scan take you?
Seconds a scan takes, on a ruler from 0 to 30. Results shows the median and the middle half, so a few very slow scans don't skew the figure.
- 09Big scale
How well does the camera work in low light?
How the camera copes in low light, from 1 to 10. Read low scores with the scan problem question to see whether darkness is the main failure.
Photo quality and editing
Ask about the photos the app saves and how users fix them, before you change compression or the editor.
- 05Stars
How good is the quality of the photos the app saves?
Rates the quality of the photos the app saves, on five stars. A low rating beside good scan scores points to compression or saving.
- 11Yes / No
Do you crop or edit photos before you send them?
Whether users crop or edit before sending. A high share of Yes makes a case for editing tools inside the capture screen.
- 13Matrix
Rate the camera features
Rates focus, speed, cropping and saving in one grid. The heat map and row averages show which camera feature pulls the experience down.
What users want to scan next
Ask what users wish they could scan and still type by hand, with a sample of what they scan most.
- 07Text
What do you wish you could scan here?

- 14Text

What users still type in by hand from a photo, in their own words. Each answer names a field the scanner could fill in for them.
- 12File upload
Upload an example of what you scan most often
A sample of what the user scans most often, attached to the answer. Ask users to cover personal details first. File upload is on every plan, 1 per survey on Free, and picture location data is removed on upload.
Tips for asking about camera and scanning
Small choices that get honest, useful answers.
- 01
Ask right after a scan
Open the survey's link from the app after a user finishes a scan, so the answers describe the last attempt.
- 02
Protect personal details
Ask users to cover personal details before they upload a sample, and never ask for a document with ID numbers.
- 03
Fix the top failure first
Use the share for each scan problem to choose between focus, low light and recognition work.
- 04
Ask again after a camera change
Run the effort score and the scan problem question after each change to the capture screen. Results compares each card with the period before.
