Tablet layout survey questions

Tablet questions that show which screens waste the bigger display

Ask users which tablet they use, how they hold it and which screens look wrong at that size. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What tablet layout survey questions tell you

Tablet layout survey questions ask users how your app looks and works on a bigger screen: which tablet they use, how they hold it, which screens look wrong and whether space goes to waste. A phone layout stretched across a tablet still runs, and these answers show which screens to rebuild first.

Ask users who open the app on a tablet, before you plan a layout change or a few weeks after one. Usertick doesn't run inside phone or tablet apps, so send the survey's link by email or open it from the app's settings. On your web app, target the survey to tablets. Pick four to six questions.

Each written answer gets a theme, a type and a sentiment, so reports of the same screen group together. Select a tablet in Results and every card filters to its users, and the inbox gives each broken screen an owner.

The 14 tablet layout questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

Who uses the app on a tablet

Start with which tablet users have, where they use it and how they hold it, so you design for the right setup.

  1. 01Yes / No

Do you use the app on a tablet?

A yes or no that sorts tablet users from the rest. Add logic to skip every tablet question for users who answer No.

  2. 02Dropdown

    Which tablet do you use?

Which tablet the user has, from an iPad mini to a Windows tablet. Select one in Results to see whether layout complaints belong to one screen size.

  3. 12Dropdown

Where do you use the tablet most?

Where the tablet gets used, from home to class. Choose the answer about customers in Results to read the answers from users who show the app to others.

  4. 03Multiple choice

How do you hold the tablet when you use the app?

How users hold the tablet, upright, sideways or in a stand. Results shows each share, which tells you which orientation to design and test first.

How the layout uses the screen

These questions rate the tablet version and tell you whether users want more on screen or bigger controls.

  1. 04Stars

How well does the layout use the bigger screen?

Rates how well the layout uses the bigger screen, on five stars. Read it beside the wasted space question to see whether users want more on screen or bigger controls.

  2. 09Big scale

How much space is wasted on your tablet screen?

How much of the screen feels wasted, from 1 to 10. A high average points to a stretched phone layout that needs a second column.

  3. 13Matrix

    Rate the tablet version

Rates layout, text size, button size and speed in one grid. The heat map and row averages show which part of the tablet version to fix first.

  4. 14This or that

On a tablet you would rather see

More on one screen or bigger and simpler. Results shows the split, which settles the direction of a tablet redesign.

Screens that don't fit

Ask users to name and show the screens that look wrong, the shortest route to a fix.

  1. 07Text

Which screen looks wrong on a tablet?

The screen that looks wrong, in the user's own words. AI reading files each answer under a theme, so reports of the same screen group together.

  2. 11Screenshot

Capture the screen that does not fit your tablet

A capture of the screen that doesn't fit. From your tablet app, use File upload so users can attach a screenshot they took. On your web app, the Screenshot question captures the page. Both are on every plan, and Free allows 1 of them per survey.

Keyboards, styluses and multitasking

Ask what users do differently on a tablet, so the tablet version serves the tasks people bring to it.

  1. 05Multiple choice

What do you do on the tablet that you skip on the phone?

Lets users tick what they do on the tablet and skip on the phone. Results shows a bar with the share for each, the tasks a tablet layout should serve best.

  2. 06Yes / No

Do you use a keyboard with your tablet?

Whether the user types on a keyboard with the tablet. A high share of Yes makes keyboard shortcuts and a sensible focus order worth the work.

  3. 08Customer effort

How easy is the app to use with a stylus?

A customer effort score for using a stylus, on a 7 point scale. Add logic so only users who draw or take notes see it, and the average comes from stylus users.

  4. 10Text

What would you do with the app open beside another app?

What the user would do with the app open beside another, in their own words. The answers tell you which screens must work in a narrow split view.

Tips for asking about tablet layout

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask tablet users only

Ask the first question of everyone, then add logic so only tablet users see the rest.

  2. 02

    Target tablets on the web

On your web app, target the survey to tablets, so the layout questions reach users on the right screen.

  3. 03

Ask for the screen by name

Reword the open question to ask for the screen's name or what was on it, so the team can find it quickly.

  4. 04

    Test the orientation users choose

Use the share for each way of holding the tablet to decide which orientation to check on every release.

Add these questions to a survey

From the library to the first answers.

  1. 1

    Open the library

  3. 3

    Choose where it runs

Show the survey on your website, send it by email, share its link and QR code, or switch it to a conversation.

  4. 4

    Read the answers

Results counts every score and choice, and Usertick reads each written answer and files it by topic, on every plan.
