Freelancers and partners survey questions

Freelancer questions that keep your best people coming back

Ask freelancers and partners how the brief, the deadlines, the rate and the payment worked for them. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What freelancer feedback questions tell you

Freelancer feedback survey questions ask the people you bring in for a project how working with you went: whether the brief was clear, the deadlines realistic, the rate fair and the payment on time. Good freelancers have a choice of agencies, and the ones who stop answering your emails rarely tell you why.

Send the survey when the freelancer's part is finished and the invoice is paid, so the payment questions have a real answer. Pick four to six: the grid, the payment days, the biggest slowdown, the open question and whether they would work with you again. A link in your thank you email works well.

Each written answer gets a theme and a sentiment, so complaints about late feedback or unclear briefs add up across projects. Give each response an owner in the inbox, and pass brief problems to the producer who wrote the brief.

The 13 freelancers and partners questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

How working with you went

Start with the grid and the overall feeling, then whether the freelancer would come back or send others your way.

  1. 01Matrix

Rate working with us on each

Rates briefs, communication, payment and respect for the freelancer's time in one grid. The heat map shows which part of working with you to fix first.

  2. 11Emoji

    How did this collaboration feel?

A row of faces for the collaboration as a whole. It catches a working relationship that went sour even when every deadline was met.

  3. 04Big scale

How likely are you to work with us again?

How likely the freelancer is to work with you again, on a scale of 1 to 10. Watch the average for the people you rely on most.

  4. 12Yes / No

Would you recommend us to another freelancer?

Asks whether the freelancer would recommend you to a peer. Freelancers talk to each other, so a No here affects who answers your next call.

Briefs and deadlines

These questions show where the work slowed down and why, so producers can fix the brief or the schedule on the next project.

  1. 02Yes / No

Was the brief clear enough to start?

A yes or no on whether the brief was enough to start without a call. Select No in Results to read what those freelancers said slowed them down.

  2. 08Yes / No

    Were the deadlines realistic?

A yes or no on whether the deadlines were realistic. A rising share of No answers suggests schedules are set before the work is sized.

  3. 06Multiple choice

    What slowed you down most?

Names the single biggest slowdown, from an unclear brief to tools. Share the result with producers, since most of these options are theirs to fix.

  4. 05Text

What would make collaborating with us easier?

The open question where freelancers say what the grid can't. Each answer comes with a theme, such as briefs or feedback, so recurring problems are easy to spot.

Rates and payment

Ask about money directly, since a fair rate paid late can still cost you a good freelancer.

  1. 09Stars

How fair was the rate for this work?

A star rating for how fair the rate felt. Read it with the payment days, since a fair rate paid late still feels unfair.

  2. 03Ruler

How many days did payment take?

The days between invoice and payment, on a ruler. Results shows the median, which tells you more than an average when one invoice took months.

  3. 10This or that

How do you prefer to be engaged?

Two pairs: fixed price or hourly, and long projects or short bursts. Use the split bars when you plan how to engage freelancers next year.

Tools and portfolio

Learn which tools the freelancer works in and keep their portfolio or rate card on file for the next brief.

  1. 07Multiple choice

Which tools did you use with us?

Lets the freelancer tick every tool they used with you. Use the bars to decide which tools new freelancers need access to on day one.

  2. 13File upload

Upload your portfolio or rate card

Lets the freelancer attach a portfolio or rate card, so producers find it when they staff the next project. File upload is on every plan, 1 per survey on Free.

Tips for asking about freelancers and partners

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

    Ask after payment

Send the survey once the last invoice is paid, so the payment questions describe what actually happened.

  2. 02

    Keep it to five questions

Freelancers bill for their time. Pick the grid, the payment days, the slowdown and the open question, and thank them for answering.

  3. 03

    Share results with producers

Most answers about briefs and feedback describe how a producer ran the project. Share them, so the next brief improves.

  4. 04

    Tag the link by project

Add a project or team tag to the survey link. The tag stays with each answer, so you can compare how different teams work with freelancers.
