The breakfast table survey questions

Breakfast questions that show what guests remember from the morning

Ask guests about the buffet, the hot dishes, the coffee and finding a table. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What hotel breakfast survey questions tell you

Hotel breakfast survey questions ask guests about the meal nearly every guest eats at the hotel: what they ate, how fresh the buffet looked, how long a hot dish took, whether they found a table and what a fair price would be. A crowded room at half past eight or an empty tray of eggs shapes the rating of the whole stay, and few guests mention it at the desk.

Ask on the morning itself, with a QR code on each table or by the coffee station, or the next morning for guests on longer stays. Keep it to three questions at the table: the breakfast grid or the freshness rating, how the room felt and one open question. Keep the price and opening hours questions for the survey after checkout.

Each written answer gets a category, a theme, a sentiment and an urgency as it arrives, so a dish that ran out three mornings in a row shows up as a theme your breakfast team can act on before the weekend.

The 14 the breakfast table questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

How breakfast rated

The grid, the freshness rating and how the room felt give you one picture of the morning, station by station.

  1. 12Matrix

    Rate the morning on each

Rates hot food, bread and pastries, fruit and cereal, and coffee and tea on one grid. The heat map shows which station pulls breakfast down, with an average per row.

  2. 06Stars

How fresh did the food look at the buffet?

A star rating for how fresh the buffet looked. Results shows the average and the share who rated 4 or higher; compare early and late guests, since trays look different by ten o'clock.

  3. 07Emoji

How did the breakfast room feel?

How the breakfast room felt, on a row of faces. It picks up noise, light and crowding, which the food ratings miss; Results shows each face with its share.

The food on offer

Ask what guests ate, whether there was enough and what they missed or remember, before you change the spread.

  1. 03Multiple choice

What did you eat this morning?

Lists what the guest ate, with several picks allowed. Results shows a bar per option, which tells you which stations earn their space and which you can trim.

  2. 05Multiple choice

How much food was on offer?

How much food was on offer, on five steps from far too little to far too much. Results shows the share of each; answers on the too much side point to waste you can cut.

  3. 10Text

What was missing from the breakfast spread?

An open question for what was missing from the spread. Each answer gets a theme, so repeated requests for a local dish, oat milk or gluten-free bread stand out.

  4. 09Text

Which breakfast dish do you still remember?

An open question for the dish the guest still remembers. These answers name the dishes to keep, and a dish named again and again belongs in your welcome email.

Tables, waits and refills

These show where the morning slows down, from the busiest hour to the wait for eggs and a second coffee.

  1. 02Multiple choice

What time did you come down for breakfast?

One pick for the hour the guest came down. Results shows a donut with each share; read the busiest slot beside the table question to see when the room runs out of seats.

  2. 04Dropdown

How easy was it to find a table?

How easy it was to find a table, from straight away to giving up. Results shows each share and count; a guest who gave up skipped breakfast, so give that answer an owner.

  3. 11Ruler

How many minutes did you wait for a hot dish?

Minutes waited for a hot dish, on a ruler from 0 to 30. Results shows the median and the middle half; compare it with the time your kitchen aims for on a busy morning.

  4. 08Customer effort

How easy was it to get a coffee refill?

A customer effort score for getting a coffee refill, on a 7-point scale. A low score points to too few staff on the floor or a machine guests can't reach.

Price and opening hours

Ask these after checkout to set the breakfast price and hours, and compare guests whose rate included breakfast.

  1. 01Yes / No

Was breakfast included in your rate?

A yes or no on whether breakfast was in the rate. Select each answer in Results to compare the two groups, since guests who paid separately may judge the spread more strictly.

  2. 14Slider

What is a fair price for breakfast per person?

A fair price per person for breakfast, on a slider from 5 to 60. Results shows the median and the middle half, a sound guide when you price breakfast for guests on room-only rates.

  3. 13Date

    What time should breakfast open?

Asks what time breakfast should open. As a date question, Results shows a calendar of picked dates and records the day, so change it to a multiple choice of opening times before you use it.

Tips for asking about the breakfast table

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

Put the QR code on the table

Guests at breakfast have time and a phone in hand. A small card on each table gets answers while the plate is still in front of them.

  2. 02

Note the time of the visit

Ask what time the guest came down, so a weak rating at nine can be told apart from a good one at seven.

  3. 03

    Fix the busiest hour first

Read the freshness and table answers for the busiest slot, and plan refills and staff around it.

  4. 04

    Ask about price after checkout

Keep the price and opening hours questions for the survey after the stay, and keep the table card to the food.
