Online learning questions that show where learners lose the thread
Ask learners how studying online works for them, from the platform and the videos to the time they can give it. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.
What online learning survey questions tell you
Online learning survey questions ask learners about the parts of a course you can't see from the front of a room: whether the platform is easy to use, whether videos load, how long they can focus and what distracts them at home. The answers separate problems with the platform from problems with the course, so the right team fixes each one.
Ask two or three weeks into a course, once learners have used the videos, quizzes and forums, and again near the end. Run the survey on the course site as a side button or a popup after a lesson, or send the link by email, and pick five to seven questions.
Each written answer is read as it arrives and given a type such as bug, idea or complaint, so a broken quiz and a wish for transcripts end up in different places. Give each response an owner in the inbox, and send bug reports to Jira or Linear for the platform team.

The 14 online learning questions, with when to ask each
Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.
The learning platform itself
Ease of use, the features and whether videos load, with a screenshot when something breaks. Send these answers to whoever runs the platform.
- 01Customer effort
How easy is the learning platform to use?
A customer effort score for the platform, on a 7-point scale. Results shows the average and the share who found it easy; ask it once learners have used videos, quizzes and grades.
- 02Matrix
Rate each platform feature
Rates videos, quizzes, forums and grades in one grid. The heat map shows which feature pulls the platform down, and row averages let you check whether a redesign helped.
- 03Yes / No
Do the videos load without trouble?
A plain check on video playback. Results shows the share that said yes; select No and read the device question to see whether the trouble sits with phones or with one kind of device.
- 13Screenshot
Capture the lesson or quiz that did not work
Lets a learner capture the lesson or quiz that broke, so the platform team sees the error itself. Screenshots appear in a gallery in Results. Screenshot is on every plan, 1 per survey on Free.
Focus, motivation and time
How long learners can focus, what pulls them away and how much time they have, which together shape lesson length and deadlines.
- 05Ruler
How many minutes can you focus on a lesson?
How many minutes a learner can focus on one lesson, on a ruler. Results shows the median and the middle half; use the median as a ceiling for lesson length.
- 06Multiple choice
What distracts you during online lessons?
Picks everything that distracts learners, from notifications to poor audio. Keep Nothing as an option; Poor audio is the one you can fix on your side.
- 08Big scale
How motivated do you feel learning online?
How motivated learners feel studying online, from 1 to 10. Results shows the average and a column per step; read the low end next to the distraction question to see what drags it down.
- 14Slider
How many hours a week can you set aside for this course?
Hours a week the learner can give the course, on a slider. Results shows the median and the middle half; compare it with the hours the course expects before you set deadlines.
How and where learners study
The place, the device and the format learners prefer, read together before you change how lessons are built.
- 04Multiple choice
Where do you watch lessons?
Where learners watch lessons. A large share On the go is a reason to keep lessons short and make sure they still work with the sound off.
- 09This or that
How do you like to learn online?
Two pairs: live or recorded, short or long. Results shows a split bar per pair, which helps before you decide how to record the next course.
- 10Dropdown
Which device do you use most for studying?
The device learners use most for study. Select Phone in Results to filter the whole page and see how those learners rate the videos and quizzes.
- 11Yes / No
Do you use the mobile app?
Whether learners use your mobile app, if you offer one. Select Yes in Results to compare their effort score with the rest of the class.
Quizzes and missing features
Rate the quizzes and ask what the platform lacks, for the next round of changes.
- 12Stars
How useful are the quizzes?
How useful the quizzes are, in stars. Results shows the average and a bar per rating; a low score with high video ratings can mean the quizzes test something the lessons didn't cover.
- 07Text
Which feature is missing from the platform?
Asks which feature learners miss on the platform. Each answer gets a type and a theme, so repeated requests such as offline viewing or a transcript stand out.
Tips for asking about online learning
Small choices that get honest, useful answers.
- 01
Ask after a few weeks of use
Wait until learners have tried the videos, quizzes and forums. Asked in the first days, the platform questions mostly measure the login.
- 02
Ask on the platform itself
A side button or a popup after a lesson reaches learners while they are on the course, which suits the video and screenshot questions.
- 03
Send platform bugs to the right team
Give bug reports an owner in the inbox, and keep feedback on course content with the instructors. The type each answer gets helps you sort them.
- 04
Match lesson length to focus
Use the median focus time and weekly hours to set lesson length and deadlines, and ask again after you change them.
