Exam preparation survey template

Learn how ready students feel, while there is time to help

Three questions for two weeks before exams: how ready students feel, which study resources have helped most and what they still need. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this exam preparation survey tells you

An exam preparation survey asks students how ready they feel while there is still time to help them. This template takes about a minute: readiness on a 1 to 10 scale, a ranking of five resources from practice exams to office hours, and an open question on what they still need from the course team.

It is written for an email to college students two weeks before exams, scheduled ahead and sent to the course's contact list. The same template runs as a link on the course page or in a class announcement, as a QR code at a review session, or as a conversation that asks one question at a time.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your education list, such as assessments and grades or student support, with a type and an urgency. Results shows the average readiness with a column per step and the average place of each resource, each compared with the period before, so you can see how one exam season compares with the last.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Big scale

How ready do you feel for the exam?

Why ask it
Readiness is the number you can still move in two weeks. Asked first, it frames the rest of the survey around what would raise it.
What you learn
The average and a column per step from not ready to fully ready, so a large group at the low end shows how many students need help before the exam.
Make it yours
The email shows a start button for this question, so keep a short line above it that says the survey takes a minute.
Question 2 of 3 · Ranking · Optional

Rank what has helped you most

Why ask it
Ranking shows which of the resources you already offer students actually rely on, so you know where to add sessions, hours or materials.
What you learn
The average place of each resource, so the one students put first leads the list. Select a low readiness score to compare the ranking of students who feel unready with the rest.
Make it yours
Replace the five resources with what your course really offers, such as a tutoring center or a recorded review lecture.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What do you still need from us?

Why ask it
Students name the topic, the past paper or the hour of help they are missing, which tells you what to add in the time left.
What you learn
Usertick gives each answer a sentiment and a theme, files it under a category from your list and flags the urgent ones, so a shared gap, such as one unit nobody understands, shows as one theme.
Make it yours
Read the answers the day they come in and post a review session or extra practice for the top theme within the week, while students can still use it.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Every written answer, read for you

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Send it with time to act

Two weeks leaves room for one more review session or a practice exam. Schedule the email ahead, up to 30 days in advance.

  2. 02

Send by email to follow up

A survey sent through Usertick email ties each answer to the student's contact, so an advisor can reach the students who feel least ready.

  3. 03

Answer the top theme for everyone

Post one note to the whole class covering the gap most students named, so students who didn't answer get the help too.

  4. 04

    Keep the questions the same

Ask the same three questions before every exam season, and Results compares each period with the one before.
