Usertick
Learning platform survey template

Find what students struggle with, in your learning platform

Three questions for the middle of the term: how easy the platform is to use, how well five everyday tasks work and what frustrates students most. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this learning platform survey tells you

A learning platform survey asks students how well the LMS works for the tasks they do every week. This template takes about a minute: an effort score for using the platform, a rating for five tasks from finding course materials to using it on a phone, and an open question on what frustrates them most.

It is written for an email to students midway through the term, when they have used every part of the platform at least once. When the platform runs on a domain you control, the Usertick script can show the same survey as a popup inside it; otherwise share the link in a course announcement, or open it as a conversation that asks one question at a time.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your education list, such as platform and access or assessments and grades, with a type and an urgency, so a broken upload stands out. Results shows the average effort on the 1 to 7 scale and the share who found it easy, and a heat map of the five tasks, each against the period before.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Customer effort

How easy is the learning platform to use?

Why ask it
A learning platform is a tool students use to get work done, so effort is the right measure. A score from very difficult to very easy shows friction a satisfaction score would hide.
What you learn
The average on the 1 to 7 scale and the share who found it easy, with a hard-to-easy bar, against the period before.
Make it yours
Keep it first. In the email it can be answered inside the message, and the rest of the survey opens with that score kept.
Question 2 of 3 · Matrix · Optional

How well does each of these work?

Why ask it
Five rows cover the tasks students repeat every week, so the weak one shows instead of a general complaint about the platform.
What you learn
A heat map with one row per task and its average. Select a low rating on Using it on a phone to read what those students find most frustrating.
Make it yours
Swap in the tasks your platform handles, such as joining live classes or taking quizzes, and keep the five columns.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What frustrates you most about the platform?

Why ask it
Asking what frustrates students most gets the specific bug, slow page or missing feature behind a low rating.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, marks it as a bug, an idea or a complaint, gives it a theme, a sentiment and an urgency, and groups the themes with their trends.
Make it yours
Send the bugs to your platform team or vendor with the theme counts, so fixes are ranked by how many students hit them.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask at midterm

By the middle of the term students have submitted work and seen grades, so every row has something to judge.

  2. 02

Send bugs to the team that fixes them

On every plan, a workflow opens a Jira or Linear issue for each answer marked as a bug. From Starter, it can also post them to Slack or Microsoft Teams.

  3. 03

    Check the phone row

When Using it on a phone rates lowest, try the main tasks on a phone yourself before you change anything else.

  4. 04

    Ask again after an update

Run it again after a major platform update, and Results compares the new period with the one before.
