Profile questions that show who your customers really are
Ask customers about their work, their company and how to reach them, so every other answer can be read by group. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.
What profile survey questions tell you
Demographic and profile survey questions ask who customers are: their industry, role, level, team and company size, where they are based and which language they prefer. On their own these answers are background, and next to a score or an open answer they show which groups are happy and which are not.
Ask them once, at sign up or in the first survey a customer gets, and keep only the two or three you will use to split results. Put them at the end of a survey, after the questions customers came to answer, and make the personal ones such as age optional.
Selecting an answer in Results filters the whole page to the people who gave it, so a single industry or role question lets you read every other card for that group. Ask only what your own records don't already hold.

The 12 profile questions, with when to ask each
Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.
Their work
Industry, role and level let you read every other answer by the kind of work customers do.
- 01Dropdown
Which industry do you work in?
The customer's industry. Results shows each share, and selecting one filters every other answer to that industry. Add the industries you serve and an Other option before you send it.
- 03Dropdown
What best describes your role?
The customer's role. Add the roles you sell to before sending, since the list is short, then read every other answer role by role.
- 05Dropdown
What is your level?
The customer's level, from individual contributor to executive. It shows whether feedback comes from the people who use the product or the people who buy it.
Their company
Team size, company size and region show which kinds of accounts you serve and where they are.
- 02Dropdown
How big is your team?
How big the customer's team is. Read scores by team size to see whether solo users and large teams want different things.
- 04Dropdown
How many people work at your company?
How many people work at the customer's company. Ask it alongside team size when one team inside a large company is using your product.
- 06Dropdown
Where are you based?
The customer's region. A website survey can already be targeted by countries, so this question matters most for link and email surveys.
Their history with you
These place each answer in the customer's time with you, so new and long-term customers can be read apart.
- 07Multiple choice
Which describes you best?
Whether the customer is new, returning or still deciding. Put it first in a mixed survey, and add logic so each group skips the questions that don't apply to them.
- 10Date
When did you start using us?
The date the customer started with you, picked on a calendar. Use it when your records don't hold it, such as for customers who came through a partner.
Personal details and how to reach them
Ask these only when you will use them, such as for translations or a follow-up, and keep them optional.
- 11Text
Which language would you prefer?
The customer's preferred language in their own words. Read the themes to decide which language to add next, or turn it into a list once you know the options.
- 12Dropdown
Which languages do you speak at home?
Every language the customer speaks at home, picked from a short list. Results shows bars with each share, which helps you plan translations and support in other languages.
- 08Dropdown
Which age group are you in?
The customer's age group, with Prefer not to say included. Ask it only when age changes what you do, and keep it optional.
- 09Contact
How can we reach you?
A name and email for a follow-up. Results shows them in a table, so ask it only when your team will get in touch.
Tips for asking about profile
Small choices that get honest, useful answers.
- 01
Ask only what you will use
Every profile question costs an answer somewhere else. Keep the ones you will use to split results or to act, and drop the rest.
- 02
Put profile questions last
Ask what the survey is for first and the background questions after it, so a customer who stops early still leaves the answers that matter.
- 03
Make personal questions optional
Let customers skip age, language and contact details, and include a choice such as Prefer not to say.
- 04
Ask once, then reuse
Ask profile questions in the first survey a customer gets, and keep the answers with your own records instead of asking every time.
Add these questions to a survey
From the library to the first answers.
- 1
Open the library
In the Usertick survey editor, choose From library, filter by industry and topic, and add several questions at once.
- 2
Or paste your own list
Paste questions reads up to 10 questions from any text on Free, 100 on Starter and 200 on Pro and above, keeps your wording and picks an answer type for each.
- 3
Choose where it runs
Show the survey on your website, send it by email, share its link and QR code, or switch it to a conversation.
- 4
Read the answers
Results counts every score and choice, and Usertick reads each written answer and files it by topic, on every plan.
