Writing a review survey questions

Review questions that bring more reviews to your product pages

Ask shoppers what stops them reviewing, when they want to be asked and whose reviews they trust. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.

What product review survey questions tell you

Product review survey questions ask shoppers whether they review what they buy, what stops them, when they want to be asked and which reviews they trust. Reviews sell to the next shopper, and these answers show how to get more of them and which kinds carry weight.

Ask after the shopper has used the product, by email or link, a week or two after delivery for most items. Three to five questions is enough. The rating, the one line review, the photo and the consent question together make a short review form of their own.

Each written answer gets a category, a theme, a type such as praise or complaint, and a sentiment, and each response an urgency, so a one line review that is really a complaint reaches support first. Publish only the reviews of shoppers who agreed, with their first name.

The 13 writing a review questions, with when to ask each

Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.

The review itself

A rating, a line, a photo and permission to publish make a short review form on their own.

  1. 07Stars

How would you rate this product?

A star rating for the product itself. Results shows the average, a bar per rating and the share who gave four or more, a quick read before the reviews go live.

  2. 09Text

In one line, what would your review say?

The review in one line, in the shopper's words. Each answer arrives with a sentiment and a theme, so praise and complaints are easy to separate. Publish it only with the shopper's permission.

  3. 12File upload

Add a photo of the product in use for your review

A photo of the product in use, attached to the review. File upload is on every plan, 1 per survey on Free, and location data is removed from the photo before it appears in the gallery in Results.

  4. 13Consent

May we publish your review with your first name?

Asks for permission to publish the review with the shopper's first name. Put it last, and publish only the reviews of shoppers who agreed.

Why shoppers do or don't review

Ask what stops shoppers and what would help, before you change your review request.

  1. 01Yes / No

Have you left a review for this order?

A yes or no on whether the shopper reviewed this order. Use logic to show the questions about what stops them only after a No.

  2. 02Multiple choice

What stops you writing a review?

The main reason the shopper doesn't review, from time to privacy. The donut shows the share for each, and a large share who forget points at a better timed request.

  3. 03Multiple choice

What would make you write one?

Shoppers pick everything that would get them to write, from a reminder to seeing the brand reply. Bars show each share, a guide to which change will bring more reviews.

  4. 04Dropdown

How soon after delivery should we ask for a review?

When shoppers want to be asked, from the same day to never. Results shows the share for each, and the most common answer is the delay to use for your review request email.

  5. 06Customer effort

How easy was it to leave your review?

A customer effort score for leaving the review. A low average points at a long form, a login step or a broken photo upload.

  6. 10Text

What should a review form ask you?

An open question for what a review form should ask. These answers help you add fields shoppers care about, such as fit or how long the product lasted.

How shoppers use reviews

Ask which reviews shoppers trust and how many they read, to decide what to show first on the page.

  1. 05Multiple choice

Whose reviews do you trust most?

Whose reviews the shopper trusts most, from verified buyers to the lowest ratings. The donut shows the share for each, a guide to which reviews to show first and which labels to add.

  2. 08Big scale

How much do reviews change what you buy?

How much reviews change what the shopper buys, on a scale of 1 to 10. A column per step in Results shows how much weight your shoppers put on them.

  3. 11Number

How many reviews do you read before buying?

How many reviews the shopper reads before buying. Results shows the median and the middle half, a guide to how many reviews to show on the page.

Tips for asking about writing a review

Small choices that get honest, useful answers.

  1. 01

Ask once the product is in use

Send the survey a week or two after delivery, or later for products that take time to judge.

  2. 02

    Ask for permission to publish

End with the consent question, and publish only the reviews of shoppers who agreed.

  3. 03

    Read complaints before publishing

Each response gets an urgency, so give low ratings and complaints an owner in the inbox before the review goes on the page.

  4. 04

    Use the timing answer

Set your review request to the delay most shoppers chose in the question about how soon to ask.
