Checkout questions that shorten the line at your registers
Ask shoppers how paying went, from the line and the wait to the person at the register and the receipt. Each question below comes with when to ask it and what the answer tells you.
What in-store checkout survey questions tell you
In-store checkout survey questions ask shoppers how paying went: whether a register was open, how long the line was, how they paid and how the person at the register treated them. The last minute of a visit colors the whole trip, and a long line can undo the time a shopper spent finding the right item.
Ask right after paying, with a QR code on the receipt or a sign at the register, or with a link on your email receipt. Two to four questions is enough for a shopper with bags in hand. Run one survey per store, or tag each store's link, so each line is judged where it happened.
Each written answer gets a category, a theme, a type such as complaint or praise, and a sentiment, and each response an urgency. Selecting an answer in Results filters the whole page, for example to shoppers who nearly left because of the line.

The 13 paying in store questions, with when to ask each
Grouped by what they tell you. Use them as they are or change the wording.
The line and what would speed it up
Measure the wait and ask what would shorten it, so changes at the front of the store start from the shoppers in line.
- 01Yes / No
Was a register open when you were ready to pay?
A yes or no on whether a register was open when the shopper was ready. Select No in Results and check the dates against your staff schedule.
- 03Multiple choice
How long was the line?
Five steps from no line to so long they nearly left. The donut shows the share for each, and the last share is the one to watch: shoppers who almost walked out.
- 10Ruler
How many minutes did you wait to pay?
Minutes spent waiting to pay, on a ruler. Results shows the median and the middle half, which is fairer than an average when one shopper waited behind a price check.
- 04Multiple choice
What would speed up paying?
Shoppers pick every change that would speed paying up, from more staff to self checkout. Bars show each share, a ranked list before you change the front of the store.
- 13Date
What time did you pay?
It is a date question, so it collects only the day of the visit. Reword it to ask for the day, and add a dropdown of time bands if you staff registers by the hour.
How shoppers paid
Ask how shoppers paid and what they prefer, before you add self checkout or change receipts.
- 02Multiple choice
How did you pay at the register?
How the shopper paid, from card to installments. The donut shows the share for each, a guide to which payment methods every register must take.
- 11Number
How many items did you take to the register?
How many items the shopper brought to the register. Results shows the median and the middle half, which helps you decide whether a small basket line would help.
- 06Customer effort
How easy was paying in the store?
A customer effort score for paying in the store. Results shows the average and the share who found it easy, store by store if each store has its own survey.
- 05Yes / No
Were you asked for your email at the register?
A yes or no on whether staff asked for an email. Read it beside the faces for the last minute, to see whether the request slows the line or bothers shoppers.
- 12This or that
At the register you prefer
Two pairs: self checkout or a person, and a paper or email receipt. The split bar per pair shows what shoppers prefer before you change the front of the store.
The person at the register
End with the people at the registers and the moment shoppers leave with, for the store manager to act on.
- 07Stars
How would you rate the person at the register?
A star rating for the person at the register. Results shows the average and a bar per rating. Share the high ratings with the team and read the low ones beside the wait time.
- 08Emoji
How did the last minute of your visit feel?
A row of faces for the last minute of the visit. Results shows each face's share, a quick read on the moment shoppers carry out of the store with them.
- 09Text
What happened at the register that we should know about?
An open question for anything that happened at the register. Each answer arrives with a theme and a sentiment, and each response an urgency, so a complaint about a charge reaches the manager first.
Tips for asking about paying in store
Small choices that get honest, useful answers.
- 01
Put the code on the receipt
A QR code on the receipt reaches every shopper who paid, while the line is still fresh.
- 02
Ask about the hour as well
The date question collects the day only. Add a dropdown of time bands to match long lines with your staff schedule.
- 03
Watch the share who nearly left
Track the share of shoppers who nearly left over the line each week, store by store.
- 04
Share praise with the registers
Pass the high ratings and the kind words to the people at the registers every week.
