Usertick
Unsubscribe survey template

Learn why readers leave your list, and what would have kept them

Three questions on your unsubscribe confirmation page: why the person is leaving, whether fewer emails would have kept them and what they liked getting. Usertick reads every written answer, so you know what to keep sending.

What this unsubscribe survey tells you

An unsubscribe survey asks people why they are leaving your email list at the moment they leave. This template offers five reasons, from too many emails to getting the same content elsewhere, with a write-in Other, then asks whether fewer emails would have kept them and what they liked getting from you. It takes about 45 seconds.

It is written for the confirmation page people see after they unsubscribe, inside the page under the confirmation or as a popup on page load. The page has to be on your own domain, because the script runs only on its site's verified domain, so an unsubscribe page hosted by your email provider can't show it. The person has already left the list, so the survey never stands between them and leaving.

Results shows the share of each reason with the typed Other answers listed, the share who say fewer emails would have kept them, and each written answer with its theme, each against the period before. Select the reason about too many emails to see whether those readers would have stayed for fewer. Each written answer gets a theme and a type, such as complaint or praise.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice

Why are you unsubscribing?

Why ask it
Each reason calls for a different fix: too many emails for a lower pace, content that isn't relevant for better targeting, and not remembering signing up for a look at how people join your list.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each reason, typed Other answers listed, and stacked shares over time, so a campaign that drove people away shows in the period after.
Make it yours
Add a reason that fits your list, such as I only signed up for a discount, when your signup form offers one.
Question 2 of 3 · Yes / No

Would fewer emails have kept you subscribed?

Why ask it
A yes means the reader liked the content and left over volume, which a lower pace or a digest can fix.
What you learn
The share that said yes, against the period before. Select Yes to read what those readers liked getting, and check the share again after you lower the pace.
Make it yours
When the yes share is high, offer a monthly digest on your unsubscribe page, next to the button that confirms leaving.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

Was there anything you liked getting from us?

Why ask it
Even readers who leave can name the emails worth keeping. Their answers tell you what to send more of to the people who stay.
What you learn
Each answer with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, so readers in a hurry can leave after two taps.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask after the unsubscribe

Show the survey once the unsubscribe is done, so answering is a choice and never a step before leaving.

  2. 02

Host the page on your site

Use a confirmation page on your own domain, and set your email tool to send people there after they unsubscribe, if the tool allows it. Keep the confirmation message above the survey, so readers know the unsubscribe went through.

  3. 03

    Place it inside the page

Embed the survey under the confirmation message, where it shows as soon as the page loads, with no popup to close.

  4. 04

    Act on the volume answers

When too many emails is the top reason, cut the pace or add a digest, then compare that reason's share with the period before.

Frequently asked questions

Only when the page is on your own domain, because the survey runs only on its site's verified domain. Check whether your email tool can send people to a page on your site after they unsubscribe.

After. People should be able to leave in one step, so show the survey on the confirmation page once they have left.

Fix the largest reason first: lower the pace for too many emails, or tighten your targeting for content that isn't relevant. After each change, compare the share of that reason with the period before.

The survey doesn't resubscribe anyone. Use what they liked getting to improve the emails for the readers who stay, and offer a digest to people who sign up later.

Two or three. The reader has already decided to leave, so one tap for the reason, one for volume and an optional comment is a fair amount to ask.
