Score a Likert scale question

The Likert scale calculator scores one statement answered on a 5 or 7 point agreement scale. Enter how many people chose each point or paste the answers from your export, and it shows the share that agreed (the top two points, often called top two box), the average and the net agreement.

The split from disagree to agree shows whether opinions sit together or apart, which an average alone hides. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type or paste is sent anywhere.

How to score a Likert scale

Give each point a number from 1 (Strongly disagree) to the top of the scale (Strongly agree). The share that agreed counts the top two points; the share that disagreed counts the bottom two; net agreement is the first minus the second.

The average is the sum of the numbers divided by the answers. It is useful for following one statement over time, while the shares read more plainly in a report.

Top two box = top two points ÷ all answers

Net agreement = % agreed − % disagreed

On a 5 point scale the top two are Agree and Strongly agree; on a 7 point scale, Agree and Strongly agree as well.

A Likert scale example

Say 200 customers answer “The checkout was easy to follow”: 6 strongly disagree, 14 disagree, 30 are neutral, 90 agree and 60 strongly agree.

150 of 200 agree, or 75%, and 20 disagree, or 10%, so net agreement is +65. The average is 3.92 out of 5.

Agree or strongly agree
150, 75%
Disagree or strongly disagree
20, 10%
Average
3.92 out of 5
Net agreement
75 − 10 = +65

Write statements that score well

A Likert score is only as clear as the statement behind it.

  • Make one claim per statement, never two joined by and
  • Write it as a plain statement, without praise or blame
  • Label every point, or at least both ends and the middle
  • Keep the same scale for every statement you compare

Calculate it in Excel or Google Sheets

With the 1 to 5 answers in column A, these formulas give the scores. On a 7 point scale, count ">=6" and "<=2".

CellFormulaWhat it counts
B1=COUNTIF(A:A,">=4")/COUNT(A:A)Share that agreed
B2=COUNTIF(A:A,"<=2")/COUNT(A:A)Share that disagreed
B3=ROUND((B1-B2)*100,0)Net agreement
B4=AVERAGE(A:A)The average

Likert questions in Usertick

Ask several statements on one agreement scale with a Matrix question: up to 50 rows and 20 columns, with a Not applicable column left out of averages, shown one row at a time on phones and in popups.

Results draws each statement as a row of a heat map with its average, so the weakest statement stands out, and each card compares with the period before.

Questions about this calculator

Use the top two box to report how many people agreed, and the average to follow one statement over time. The split from disagree to agree shows when opinions are divided.

Many teams do, and the average is fine for following the same statement over time. Report it beside the shares, since an average can hide a group that strongly disagrees.

Five points are quicker to answer and easy to label; seven separate opinions a little more finely. Keep the same scale for statements you compare.

Yes. Choose Each answer and paste a column of 1 to 5 or 1 to 7 answers. Anything outside the scale is left out, and the calculator says how many values it left out.
