Usertick
First purchase survey template

Learn why new customers chose you, on the page that confirms their first order

Three questions for a first order's confirmation page: what made the customer try you, how easy the order was and what they would like to hear about next. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every typed Other answer for you.

What this first purchase survey tells you

A first purchase survey asks new customers why they took a chance on your store, while the decision is minutes old. This template keeps it to three questions and about 40 seconds, after a short welcome that thanks them for the first order: what made them try you, an effort score for placing the order, and which topics they would want to hear about from you.

It is written for the order confirmation page of a first order, where the survey sits inside the page under the order summary. To reach first orders only, limit it with a page rule on the confirmation address, or from Starter with a user trait such as an order count passed with Usertick.identify(). The same survey also runs as a link in your welcome email.

Every typed Other answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, with a type and an urgency. Results shows the share of each reason for trying you, the effort score against the period before and which topics new customers want to hear about, and selecting an answer filters the page to the customers who gave it.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice

What made you decide to try us?

Why ask it
New customers can name what tipped them, such as a friend, a review, a post or the price, more reliably now than a month from now. It shows which channel earns first orders beyond the last click your analytics records.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each reason, with typed Other answers listed, and over time as stacked shares, so a campaign or a press mention shows in the period it ran.
Make it yours
Name the places that matter to your store, such as a podcast, a marketplace or a market stall, and keep the write-in Other for the rest.
Question 2 of 3 · Customer effort

How easy was it to place your first order?

Why ask it
A first order is the hardest one: a new account or guest checkout, a first address, a first card. Effort on a 7-point scale shows whether the store works for someone who has never used it.
What you learn
Results shows the average on the 1 to 7 scale, the share who found it easy and a hard-to-easy bar, against the period before. Select the hard end to see which reasons brought those customers in.
Make it yours
If you also run a checkout survey for every order, compare the two scores, since first orders show friction that regulars have learned to work around.
Question 3 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What would you like to hear about from us?

Why ask it
Asking what customers want to hear about sets up the second order. A new customer who wants back-in-stock news belongs on a different list from one who wants offers, and Nothing, thanks gives everyone an honest way out.
What you learn
Bars show the share and count of each topic, so you can see whether new customers lean toward New arrivals, Offers or Care and use tips before you plan your welcome emails.
Make it yours
The answer doesn't subscribe anyone. On every plan, a workflow can tag the customer in Mailchimp or send an event to Klaviyo, where your own signup and consent rules decide what happens next.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How easy was it to place your first order?

The average on its own scale and the share who found it easy, against the period before and by device.

What made you decide to try us?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Reach first orders only

Add a parameter such as ?first=1 to the confirmation address of first orders and match it with a page rule, or from Starter pass an order count with Usertick.identify() and target it.

  2. 02

Let the welcome do the thanking

The welcome screen already thanks the customer, so the first question can follow straight away. Three questions suit a page people came to for their order number.

  3. 03

    Put reasons beside your spend

Set the share of each reason next to what you spend on each channel. A source that brings many first orders for little spend deserves a closer look.

  4. 04

    Ask about the product later

Ask about the product itself in a second survey after delivery. Keeping the two apart keeps each one short.

Frequently asked questions

Limit it with a page rule on the confirmation address, such as one that matches ?first=1, if your store can add that parameter to first orders. From Starter, a user trait such as an order count passed with Usertick.identify() works too.

Not on the thank you page, since Shopify's checkout, thank you and order status pages don't run website surveys. Put the survey's link in your order confirmation or welcome email instead.

Analytics records the last click. A new customer can tell you about the friend, the review or the post that came first, which often never shows up as a click.

No. The answer is stored with the response. On every plan, a workflow can pass it to Mailchimp as tags or to Klaviyo as an event, and your own signup and consent rules decide what happens next.

Three or four questions. The customer came to the page for their order number, and a survey inside the page has no close button, so keep every question easy to answer.

Yes. Every template comes with every plan, the free plan included, and the free plan covers 150 responses a month across your surveys.

Yes. The template becomes your own survey, so reword any question, add or remove questions, and change the options and the logic. The gallery stays as it is.
