Check every new student left ready, the evening after orientation

Three questions for the evening after orientation day: how it went, whether new students left with their schedule, their logins, someone to ask for help and a first contact, and what they still need to know. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this orientation survey tells you

An orientation survey asks new students whether orientation gave them what they need for the first week. This template takes about a minute: a face for the day, a check on four things every student should leave with, from their class schedule to someone to ask for help, and an open question on what they still need to know.

It is written for an email to new college students the evening after orientation, scheduled in advance so it arrives once the day is over. The same template runs as a QR code on the closing slide or in the welcome pack, as a link in the student portal, or as a conversation that asks one question at a time.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your education list, such as student support or platform and access, with a type and an urgency. Results shows the share of each face and a heat map of the four checks, so a missing login or an unclear help desk shows up the next morning, while there is still time before classes.

In an email

Send it from Usertick to a contact list, with the first question inside the email. A tap on an answer opens the rest of the survey with that answer already kept. Usertick sends 50 emails a month on the free plan, or connect your own sender.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 ยท Emoji

How was orientation?

Why ask it
A face is a quick, low-effort start for students at the end of a long day, and it gives each orientation session a mood you can compare with the next.
What you learn
Results shows each face from very bad to very good with its share, against the period before.
Make it yours
Keep it first. In the email, students tap a face inside the message and the rest of the survey opens with that answer kept.
Question 2 of 3 ยท Matrix ยท Optional

Did you leave orientation with these?

Why ask it
The point of orientation is that students leave ready for the first week. Four checks, from the schedule to a first contact, show which part of the day didn't do its job.
What you learn
A heat map with one row per item and its average, so a row where many students chose Not yet stands out against the others. Select Not yet on a row to filter the page to those students.
Make it yours
Add a row for anything your students must have before classes start, such as a student ID card or a meal plan, and keep the three columns so it stays quick.
Question 3 of 3 ยท Text ยท Optional

What do you still need to know?

Why ask it
Students name the question they didn't get to ask, such as where a building is or how to change a class, while there is still time to answer it.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, gives it a sentiment and a theme, files it under a category from your list and flags the urgent ones, so the same missing piece across many answers shows as one theme.
Make it yours
Turn the most common answers into one email or a page of frequently asked questions before the first day of classes.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Did you leave orientation with these?

Each row's answers side by side, so the part that needs work stands out.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Schedule it before the day

Create the send in advance and schedule it for early evening, up to 30 days ahead, so it arrives once the day is over.

  2. 02

    Fix logins the next morning

Read the Not yet answers on Your login and tools first. A student without a working login can't reach anything on the first day of classes.

  3. 03

Answer the gaps in one place

Gather what students still need to know into one email or page and send it before classes start.

  4. 04

    Use one survey per session

When you run several orientation days, give each its own copy of the survey, since Results doesn't split answers by a link tag.

Frequently asked questions

The evening after orientation, or the next morning at the latest. Students still remember each session, and you have time to fill gaps before classes start.

New students who are 16 or older. Usertick's terms don't allow surveys aimed at people under 16, so for younger students ask a parent or guardian about the day instead.

Import them as a CSV with an email and a name per line, add them to a list, then send the survey to that list.

Select Not yet on a row in Results to filter the page to those students, then read what they still need to know. A survey sent through Usertick email ties each answer to the student's contact, so your team can write to each of them.
