Usertick
Print vs digital survey template

Plan the move to digital with your print readers, starting from how they read today

Three questions for print subscribers: how their reading splits between paper and screen, what print still does better and whether a lower price would move them to digital only. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this print vs digital survey tells you

A print vs digital survey asks print subscribers how they really read your publication. This template takes under a minute: a slider from all on paper to all on screen, an open question on what print still does better, and a yes or no on switching to digital only for a lower price.

It is written for an email to your print subscribers, sent by Usertick to a contact list imported from your subscriber file. Since the first question is a slider, the email shows a button that opens the survey. The same template also runs as a link with a QR code printed in the paper, so readers without an email on file can answer from their phone.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as content quality or reading and playback, with a type and a sentiment. Results shows the median and the middle half of the reading split and the share who would switch, and selecting Yes filters the page to the readers ready to move.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Slider · Optional

How much of your reading is on a screen?

Why ask it
A print subscription doesn't mean all the reading happens on paper. A slider shows how far each subscriber has already moved to a screen before you ask them to move the rest of the way.
What you learn
Results shows the median and the middle half of the slider, from all on paper to all on screen, so you see whether your typical print reader is already half digital.
Make it yours
Keep it first and optional. It takes one drag and frames the rest of the survey.
Question 2 of 3 · Text · Optional

What does print still do better for you?

Why ask it
Print readers keep paying for something particular, such as the crossword, the weekend magazine or reading without a screen at breakfast. The open question names it, so a digital offer can keep it.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer as it arrives, gives it a category, a theme and a sentiment, and marks it as praise, an idea or a complaint, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Read these answers before you design a digital only plan, and carry over what readers say they would miss, such as a daily edition laid out like the paper.
Question 3 of 3 · Yes / No

Would you switch to digital only for a lower price?

Why ask it
The yes or no puts a price on the habit: it shows how many print subscribers would move to digital only if it cost less.
What you learn
The share that said yes, compared with the period before. Select Yes to see how those readers split their reading today and what they said print does better.
Make it yours
If you have a price in mind, put it in the question, such as for half the price, so the answer is about a real offer.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Print the QR code in the paper

Run the code with one short line in the paper, so subscribers without an email on file can answer too.

  2. 02

Keep email and print answers apart

Make one survey for the email and one for the printed code with Duplicate, so Results shows each group on its own.

  3. 03

    Import your print list

Import your print subscribers from a CSV into a contact list of their own, so the email reaches print readers only.

  4. 04

Follow up with the yes group

On every plan, a workflow can sync each reader who said yes to HubSpot or update their Mailchimp tags, so your team can send them a digital offer.
