Reader surveys that meet people where they read, watch and listen

Ask readers at the end of an article, subscribers in your newsletter and listeners in the show notes, and ask why people cancel. Usertick reads every written answer, files it under topics such as coverage, the paywall and ads, and sends a reported mistake to the desk that can fix it.

Hear from your audience on the page they are reading

Analytics shows which stories people opened and how far they scrolled. Reader surveys tell you whether a piece was useful, which topics readers want more of, what stops them from subscribing and why subscribers leave. Ask on the article page, in the newsletter and behind a link in the show notes.

With Usertick, a short survey sits inside the page below the story, opens when a reader reaches the end, or arrives by email with the first question inside the message. Signed-in readers answer as themselves, with their subscription passed from your site, so subscribers and registered readers can get questions of their own.

Every written answer is filed under categories made for publishers, such as content quality, topics and coverage, subscriptions and paywall, ads, and newsletters and alerts. Results shows the pages readers rate lower, and workflows send a reported mistake to the corrections desk and a cancellation reason to the subscriptions team.

Ask where your audience reads, watches and listens

Put the question beside the piece it is about, so every answer describes one story, one issue or one episode.

At the end of the article

Place the survey inside the page, below the story, so readers can rate the piece and say what was missing with no popup over the text.

When a reader finishes the story

Open a short survey once most of the article has been on screen for about half its reading time, so the people who answer have read it. Pro and above.

In the newsletter

Email the survey to your subscriber list with the rating inside the message, or add its link to the footer of your own newsletter, tagged with the issue.

In the show notes and after the video

Put a tagged link in each episode's notes, and on your own video player, open the survey once most of an episode has played. The video trigger is Starter and above, and 1 survey on Free.

To a share of readers, about the ads

After a few articles, ask a sample of readers how relevant and intrusive the ads feel and whether they would pay to remove them. A share of traffic is Starter and above, and 1 survey on Free.

Answers filed the way a newsroom works

When you choose Media at sign-up, Usertick files each written answer under subscriptions and paywall, content quality, topics and coverage, ads, reading and playback or newsletters and alerts, with a theme, a type and an urgency. Rename categories and themes on any plan, and add your own within your plan's limit, from 5 categories on Free to 30 on Business.

Learn what readers would pay for, and why subscribers leave

Ask at the paywall and in the cancel flow, where the decision happens.

When a reader keeps meeting the paywall

Your site tells Usertick each time the paywall shows, and the survey opens on the third time, asking what stops the reader from subscribing and what they would pay for. Starter and above, and 1 survey on Free.

In the cancellation flow

Show the survey on the cancel page, above the final button, and learn why subscribers leave and what they read most, so you know which coverage keeps people paying.

Put what readers say in front of the newsroom

Workflows, Results and reports take each answer to the desk that can act on it.

A reported mistake reaches the desk

Send every answer filed under Inaccurate to your corrections channel in Slack or Teams, with buttons to assign it and mark it resolved. Every plan.

Where readers rate you lower

Results shows the pages, countries and devices answers came from, each with its own score, and flags the ones that sit clearly below the rest, so a weak section or market stands out.

The topics readers keep raising

See each theme with how far it moved against the week before, and once a week reaches 30 responses, the AI reading says what changed and what to do.

An alert when complaints climb

Set a line, such as 20 complaints in 24 hours on the ads survey, and Usertick posts to Slack or Teams once it is crossed. Every plan.

A weekly report for editors

Send a dashboard of article ratings, newsletter scores and cancellation reasons as a PDF to email, Slack or Teams every Monday. Pro and above.

Works with your newsroom and audience tools

Send answers to your team chat, your email platform, your customer data tools and your warehouse, so editors and the audience team read the same feedback.

How publishers start with Usertick

Four steps from the script tag to answers in front of editors.

  1. 1

    Add Usertick to your site

Paste the script tag into your site's template once. WordPress, Ghost and other site builders each have a short guide.

  2. 2

    Start from a template

Pick Article feedback, Newsletter issue rating, Subscription barriers or Subscription cancellation, or describe what you want to learn to Create with AI.

  3. 3

    Place it beside the piece

Embed it below articles, open it when a reader finishes, send it to your list or add its link to the show notes, then choose how often it can return.

  4. 4

    Send answers to the desk

Add a workflow that posts reported mistakes to the corrections channel and cancellation reasons to the subscriptions team.

How newsrooms get answers worth reading

Six habits that keep reader surveys short and the answers specific.

  1. 01

Ask about one piece at a time

A question below an article is about that article, so every answer points to one story, one writer and one desk.

  2. 02

Keep it to a tap and a line

Ask whether the piece was useful, then one open question for the readers who want to say more.

  3. 03

    Tag every link

Add the issue, the episode or the print page to each link, so every answer names where it came from.

  4. 04

    Ask subscribers and visitors apart

Paying readers and first-time visitors want different things. Give each group questions of its own.

  5. 05

    Correct mistakes the same day

A reader who reports an error and sees the fix within hours has a reason to keep reading and to report the next one.

  6. 06

    Compare reasons over time

Ask every subscriber who cancels, and compare the reasons month by month after a price or paywall change.

Templates and questions for publishers and newsrooms

Start from a template written for articles, newsletters, subscriptions or shows, and change any question.

ProductArticle feedbackThe classic question at the end of an article: was it useful, and if not, what was missing. Place it below every article.
CSATNewsletter issue ratingLet readers rate a single issue from inside the email and say what would have made it more useful. Add it to the end of every issue to compare quality from one issue to the next.
PricingSubscription barriersFind out what stops regular readers from subscribing and what they would pay for. Show it to readers who've hit the paywall three times.
ChurnSubscription cancellationLearn why subscribers cancel and what they read most, so you know what's at stake. Show it in the cancellation flow.

Frequently asked questions

Ask readers at the end of an article, subscribers in the newsletter and listeners in the show notes, research the paywall and the ads, and ask subscribers why they cancel. Usertick reads every written answer, and workflows send each one to the desk that handles it.

Yes, on every plan. An embedded survey sits in the page before, after or inside an element you choose, such as the end of the story, with no close button and nothing over the text.

Yes. Usertick can email the survey to your contact list with the first question inside the message, within the plan's monthly sending allowance or through your own email provider. With another newsletter tool, add the survey's link to the issue, tagged with its date. On every plan, Mailchimp gets the answers as merge fields and tags on readers already in your audience.

Yes. From Starter, pass the reader's subscription with Usertick.identify() when they sign in, and a trait rule shows the survey only to subscribers or only to registered readers. For the paywall, your site sends an event each time it shows, and the survey can open on the third one, on 1 survey on Free and on every survey from Starter.

Each answer keeps the address of the page it came from. Results lists the pages with the most answers, each with its share and, when the survey has a rating, its score, and a page filter narrows Results and the inbox to one article.

Load the Usertick script once your banner allows it. Usertick keeps what it remembers in first-party storage on your site, sets no third-party cookies and stores only a hashed form of each IP address. It doesn't read Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control.

The script loads without blocking your page, and your site keeps working if Usertick can't be reached. The survey keeps its styles to itself, so your layout, your ads and your paywall look the same.

Yes. AI reads written answers in any language, and from Starter one survey can carry several languages, with each reader seeing the one their browser uses.

Usertick runs on your website and in mobile browsers. It has no SDK for native iOS or Android apps, so reach the readers of your app by email or with a link.

Embedded and popup surveys, email and link surveys, Results, AI reading and workflows to Slack, Mailchimp and Braze come with every plan. Starter adds your own events and a share of readers on every survey, Pro adds Finished reading and scheduled reports, and Business adds variants and collects up to 25,000 responses a month. Enterprise sets its own limits.
