Usertick
Newsletter rating survey template

Rate every issue from the inbox, and learn what would make the next one better

Two questions for the end of an issue: a star rating and what would have made it more useful. Use it as it is or change either question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this newsletter rating survey tells you

A newsletter rating survey asks readers to score the issue they just read. This template takes under a minute: a five-star rating and one open question on what would have made the issue more useful.

It is written for an email that Usertick sends to your subscriber list, where the stars sit inside the email and a tap opens the rest of the survey with the rating kept. If your newsletter goes out from another tool, put the survey's link or a button at the end of each issue instead. Usertick has no recurring sends, so you create each issue's send yourself, now or scheduled up to 30 days ahead.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as content quality or topics and coverage, with a type and a sentiment. Results shows the star average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, compared with the period before.

The same template on your website, behind a link, in an email and as a conversation.

In an email

Send it from Usertick to a contact list, with the first question inside the email. A tap on an answer opens the rest of the survey with that answer already kept. Usertick sends 50 emails a month on the free plan, or connect your own sender.

The 2 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 2 · Stars

How would you rate this issue?

Why ask it
A star rating is the one tap a reader can give from the inbox, and it turns each issue into a score you can follow from one week to the next.
What you learn
The star average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, compared with the period before. Use one survey per issue, made with Duplicate, to set issues side by side.
Make it yours
Keep the stars first, so readers can answer inside the email when Usertick sends it.
Question 2 of 2 · Text · Optional

What would have made this issue more useful to you?

Why ask it
A score says how the issue landed. The open question says what to change, in the reader's words: a missing link, a section that ran long or a topic to drop.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer as it arrives, gives it a category, a theme and a sentiment, and marks it as an idea, a complaint or praise, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Select the 1 to 3 star ratings in Results first, and read what those readers said would have helped.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How would you rate this issue?

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Make one survey per issue

Duplicate the survey for each issue and name it after the issue, so every issue has a score of its own in Results.

  2. 02

Tag the link in other tools

If the link goes into a newsletter sent from another tool, add ?utm_source= with the issue name. The tag stays with each answer in Google Sheets, webhooks and the API.

  3. 03

    Reuse one survey with care

If you send the same survey with each issue, turn off Skip people who already received this survey, which is on by default, or each reader gets it only once.

  4. 04

    Watch for a weak issue

On every plan, a workflow alert can post to Slack when the average rating drops below a line over a time window, so a weak issue gets a look before the next one goes out.

Frequently asked questions

Make one survey per issue with Duplicate and read their Results side by side. Results doesn't split one survey's answers by link tag, so a separate survey per issue keeps the scores apart.
