Video feedback survey template

Learn how each episode plays, the moment the video ends

Four questions for viewers who just finished an episode: a rating, how much they watched, whether the length worked and what the next one should cover. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this video feedback survey tells you

A video feedback survey asks viewers about an episode while the last scene is still on screen. This template takes about a minute: a five-star rating, how much of it they watched, whether the length was too long, too short or about right, and an open question on what to cover next.

It is written for a popup on the episode's page that opens when the video has played to the end. From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, the video watched trigger counts the time actually played in your page's own video player, so skipping ahead doesn't count. The trigger can't see inside a YouTube or Vimeo player, so for those, place the survey inside the page under the player or fire a custom event from your player's code.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as content quality or reading and playback, with a type and a sentiment. Results shows the star average, how much of the episode viewers watched and the share for each length answer, each compared with the period before.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Stars

How would you rate this episode?

Why ask it
View counts say how many people started. A rating from viewers who reached the end says whether the episode was worth the time.
What you learn
The star average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, compared with the period before, so you can set one episode against the run of the series.
Make it yours
Give each episode its own page, and the Pages card in the Audience tab shows each episode's rating beside the overall score.
Question 2 of 4 · Multiple choice

How much of it did you watch?

Why ask it
How much viewers watched explains a rating. A low score from people who left halfway points to the pacing, and from people who watched it all to the content.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count for each answer. Select Less than half to read what those viewers rated and asked for.
Make it yours
When the survey opens at the end, most answers say All of it or Most of it. Place it under the player to hear from viewers who stopped early.
Question 3 of 4 · Multiple choice

The length of the episode was

Why ask it
Length is the easiest thing to change in the edit, and viewers can say whether an episode ran long without having to explain why.
What you learn
A donut with the share for too long, about right and too short, and stacked shares over time, so a change in your edit shows in the weeks after.
Make it yours
Read it beside how much they watched: viewers who stopped early and chose Too long are pointing at where to cut.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

What should the next episode cover?

Why ask it
Viewers who reach the end are the audience for the next episode, and they know what they want from it.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer as it arrives, gives it a category, a theme and a sentiment, and marks requests as ideas, with up to 8 themes and their trends in Results.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, so a viewer who wants to move on to the next video still sends the first three answers.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Open it when the video ends

From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, keep the video watched trigger at its default of 90 percent, so the survey opens for viewers who saw the episode through.

  2. 02

    Place it under embedded players

For a YouTube or Vimeo player, embed the survey inside the page under the video, since the trigger can't see inside those players.

  3. 03

    Compare episodes by page

Keep each episode on its own page and read the Pages card in the Audience tab, where each page shows its share of answers and its rating.

  4. 04

Hear from viewers who left early

A survey that opens at the end hears mostly from viewers who finished. Run a copy inside the page under the player for a few weeks to hear from the ones who stopped.

Frequently asked questions

When the video ends, while the episode is fresh. From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, the video watched trigger opens the survey once a set share of the video has played, and on any plan the survey can sit inside the page under the player.

The video watched trigger sees only your page's own video player, so it can't tell when a YouTube or Vimeo video ends. Place the survey inside the page under the player, fire a custom event from your player's code, or put the link of a link survey made from the same template in the video description.

Select Too long in Results and read how much those viewers watched and how they rated it. If they still rated it well, tighten the edit; if they left early, look at the opening minutes.

On every plan, a workflow sends an event with each answer to Mixpanel or Segment for the viewers you identify. From Starter, it can also add each answer to a Google Sheet.
